Bit general. Why is it set on fire?

The reason can vary depending on the work? I was watching A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017) the other day and there was a scene where Count Olaf burns the book, "The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations" at the end of season 2 along with the rest of the carnival and was wondering, "is this a trope?"

That'll be Accidentally Broke the MacGuffin for ya. It englobes both accidental, and intentional destruction of a MacGuffin, at any point of the story (not just when they most needed it).

Edited by PixilateSpades But I did not give it importance.

Tropes are patterns in storytelling, used to convey meaning. So it matters whether this is about fire or about destroying the MacGuffin (or both).
