I'm trying to see if we have an existing trope for the act itself of self-modification or self-programming. not with one single example in mind.

The general concept is kind of chairs-y in the sense that you're backing into the scientific/philosophical field of cybernetics. (In the academic meaning it's less about robot limbs and more about stuff like self-modifying programs and bacteria colonies collectively doing a good impression of thinking.)

I think programmic self modification is notable as a trope, if only because it turns a Creator into part of the creation process of itself. we already have stuff like Bio-Augmentation.
