The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Closest thing might be Green Thumb for supernatural/magical manipulation of plants in general.
You get a Treetop Town when a whole community is built this way, possibly overlapping with tropes like Bamboo Technology, Organic Technology, and/or Biomanipulation depending on how elaborate the engineering gets.
Seconding Green Thumb also overlapping if this is done via phlebotinium or magical means.
Edited by Scorpion451I did come across Green Thumb, Arboreal Abode, and Treetop Town in my research. Green Thumb isn't quite what I'm looking for (it's not specifically about making buildings and furniture out of living plants), but I guess it's the closest. And both Arboreal Abode and Treetop Town are about living high up above the ground, not at ground level exclusively. I know that, at least, the unicorns in Them's Fightin' Herds only live on the ground. I can't remember if the elves in the Inheritance Cycle live on just the ground, or also higher up in the trees. It's been a while since I read the books.
Thanks for the replies, though.
I suppose "Arboreal Abode" is the closest trope that currently exists. I can't help but wonder if there are enough examples for a new trope page, though.

"The forest's size was due to the planting spells the elves used. By imbuing their voices with magic, the elves could sing plants into growing into different shapes and patterns. Every house in Ellesméra was sung from a tree." This is extremely similar to what the unicorns in TFH did.
If I close this thread, does that prevent any new replies from being made in it?

Is there a trope for this? What's it called when there's a race of magic-using characters (like elves or unicorns) who live in a forest, and they use magic to coax or make the trees, vines, bushes, and other plants in the forest grow into the buildings and dwellings they need? Like, the walls of a building aren't made by cutting and hammering planks of wood into place, they're grown naturally (with magic) out of the existing trees and plants, and you technically are inside the still-living tree.
I think it's happened in Eragon and the Inheritance Cycle (elves), but it's also described in the "Book of Lore" entry for Oleander for the video game Them's Fightin' Herds. https://www.mane6.com/book-of-lore-archive/2525-2/
"Through the generations, they have used light magic to shape the trees into structures, spiraling to the sky in graceful, wooden columns, with branches twisted into delicate woven patterns. The most beautiful of these structures is their primary temple, The Sacred Grove."
"The young one makes her way across the room, her lion’s tail swaying groggily, to a table that seems to have grown from the ground."

Is there a name for this trope, where buildings and furniture are grown out of the existing plants using magic?
