Tends to be a literal case of Mission from God. The character doesn't just think they're on such a mission, they know they are.
The "empowering a mortal agent" idea also tends to fit under In Mysterious Ways. (The agent in question might be aware that it's direct, but others may not know that in the Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane sense.)
Could be seen as forms of Divine Assistance and Divine Intervention as well.
Bargain with Heaven can be in play if this is an explicit deal- for the devout this might mean agreeing to an act of devotion to earn a miracle, for the Nay-Theist it might be a motivating reward for their services.
If they're motivated primarily by the reward and (at least initially) less enthused about finding and returning the sacred whatever to the temple of blah blah blah, you can get tropes like Not in This for Your Revolution and Only in It for the Money (doesn't have to be literal money, any material wealth-type reward will do)

Hello, Is there a trope that involves mortals working for gods? A story where a mortal has been hired by a god or gods to complete a task, to perform a service? In which the mortals are not believers but have been promised some tangible reward for their time and efforts?
I looked for this but can't find it - although I figure I was searching using the wrong terms!
thanks!
