Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
That's all assuming how pages are ranked has some intent behind it. The search is done by Google's plugin, which is completely esoteric, there may not be a way to make main pages take priority.
Also, tech changes are for Tech Wishlist.
Edited by Amonimus TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThe most popular pages, article titles close to what people are searching for and the detail on said pages factors into it, that crafty Google may not be as mysterious as it lets on! Haha, but yes interestingly the main pages are appearing in, say, Google Chrome results so it’s all sorted there. Then for other series here on TV Tropes a number of searches also bring up main series and character pages, which makes sense now given it’s the same search feature.
It was just My Hero Academia that had a variation. It may be a question of whether TV Tropes would like to have these other pages appear first, I’m not sure if that was something felt to be best in this specific case for what could be any number of good reasons.
Also thank you for pointing out the Tech Wishlist area! Funnily enough I actually checked the Forum but didn’t think the Tech Wishlist & Bug Reports area was the right place. Now it’s clearer that it may actually be bug related given so far it’s just the one occurrence, again unless this was intentional, not sure.
If TV Tropes would like the main pages appearing at the top in its search results for My Hero Academia and indeed any other series would you like me to ask for you on the Tech Wishlist area? If I mention the My Hero Academia example (I could try and check if there are other instances) and request may the main pages appear at the top. At some point could there be technical changes to facilitate this, or may it be examined whether there is a pesky bug hiding somewhere, that might help if that sounds like a plan! Should I ask there if this is to be the way forward?
Ooh even better, that is a best case scenario! In retrospect the Franchise page appearing in Internet search results is ideal as well. May you share where this New Search is? Perhaps we should ask if the current Search feature in the top right of TV Tropes can be updated with New Search because that solves the issue really.
New Search is just a toggle that changes how our search works, you just click the button on the search page.
Upgrading to "New Search" is actually the last thing any of us want. Try it right now with a random work (NOT one of these popular pages). It's horrendously glitched to the point of widely being considered useless.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallHahaha, that was actually really funny! Perhaps the New Search update is not the best course of action right now then XD
But yes I'll mention the My Hero Academia example on the Tech Wishlist. On paper, if the main pages were appearing first in search results that's more helpful for those reading and for TV Tropes itself so that's double perfect!
Thanks for everyone's views, our group effort has the possibility of making the nice things ever nicer, hooray!

Hello everyone! I appreciate it may not be asking in the right place, but may search engine optimisation matters be discussed? With My Hero Academia as an example, excellently what could be called the most prominent areas are appearing when the series is searched for using Google Chrome for instance where it’s certainly helpful for readers to come across the Manga main page, and the characters as well for the top search results.
When the Search feature here on TV Tropes is used however, the current top results are the Dethroning Moment / My Hero Academia - TV Tropes and Fanfic Recs / My Hero Academia - TV Tropes areas https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/search_result.php?cx=partner-pub-6610802604051523%3Aamzitfn8e7v&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=ISO-8859-1&siteurl=&ref=&ss=&q=my+hero+academia#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=my%20hero%20academia&gsc.page=1
It’s wonderful that people are free to share their views and those areas are important, yet where an average reader is concerned would it be better if the main page and character ones were appearing first for them to see?
If search data for TV Tropes does show that readers are seeking out these pages and those are in practice better to be at the top of the results then that’s all good. However if not then it may be best if the main articles concerning the series itself appear first. Improved SEO might help readers more readily locate what they are searching for which would help them and the TV Tropes site itself.
Should it be new information, this might be something that just concerns My Hero Academia. Searching for various series brings up what would be the most notable areas for them. It’s franchises such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, then TV series such as House of the Dragon that all have the same setup. Anime series such as Attack on Titan are similar, it’s just for whatever reason My Hero Academia has its own thing going on!
If the current setup is helpful for what is best here that’s good, but if it’s beneficial to point out, then should there be technical updates to ensure that these pages appear first? https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manga/MyHeroAcademia
(and) https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/MyHeroAcademia
Not sure if that’s even useful to share, but being of the view that all the lovely articles should be available IMMEDIATELY! thought it might be helpful to raise in any case!
