Can you give an estimate of how long is "a long time ago"? Because I want to suggest R-Type Final from 2004, with a forest-like second stage (and the player can affect the climate on future playthroughs) while the fourth stage is a deserted lab that I believe has a liquid segment during at least the boss fight.

(Edited for clarity and additional information)

It wasn't too long after Smash Bros. Melee but the game might have been older, we had most things of Melee unlocked though.

It was on the PS 2 so it could have been something before that. It doesn't look like R-Type Final, I saw some gameplay of it. Stage 2.1 definitely reminds me of a more recent game, but it's not the one I'm looking for. Does R-Type Final even have a multiplayer Co-op, and if it does is it on the same screen? I forgot to mention that it was a different ship, and not a part of the ship like in the space shooter segment of Gunstar Heroes.

The one I'm thinking of had, again, Donkey-Kong like graphics, although might have been slightly more flat. It wasn't full 3D like R-type Final was, or at least I don't think it was. The ship was larger on the screen though, and had a more rounded or sloped front and top. The forest had very tall trees, resulting in mostly vertical tree-trunks in the background. The screen at one point scrolled vertically a bit, probably still going forward too. There was either a boss or a mid-boss that was fought in the sky above on the same stage I think, I know it was on the same stage at least. I remember the boss or miniboss being on the right side of the screen, taking up most of the right side. I think it might have changed positions at some point during the fight, or forms maybe, but I'm not sure.

There was some bullet or weapon type that swirled around and looked like colored lazer shrimp, or the type of firework that swirls around, and it was green I think. The water level was more like a large underwater cavern than I saw on R-Type Final, and everything was more zoomed in I think. On R-Type Final, it was an ocean floor with a sunken ship or two in the background, but this was not the case on the game I'm trying to remember.

I have seen something that looked like it on a compilation video with clips from various other games, but I have no idea how I would even search for that video now. Everything I posted on here is all I can remember pretty much, other powerups I can't remember or other levels, and I think the other player was a different color. It had at least two players able to play though, and different ships. That's all the info I can offer, let me know if anyone has any idea at all what it might be, anything at all that might help please. Don't be afraid to ask more questions either, it might remind me of something.

Ah, whoops, I glossed over the part about simultaneous co-op. I don't think R-Type Final has any multiplayer modes.

Anyway, one other resource I remembered about is a website based around shoot-em-up games, appropriately named "SHMUPS!" Looks like it hasn't updated since Fall 2010, but here is their list of PS2 shoot-em-up titles, which might be a good starting point to reference (not too many actually clickable links, since there are so few reviews for this list).

I checked let's plays and gameplay videos of every game on the list, even the ones marked vertical shooters even though I remember it being a sidescroller shooter. I can't find the game though. It's possible it might have been an older game though, I'll check the playstation list, if it's not there though it'll be hard to find because even google likes to put numbers after playstation when I enter it in the search.

Do you know if there's any ports too that might be the game I'm thinking of? It had SNES style graphics if I remember right.

I watched some videos for G-Darius and the game plays similar to what I remember, including turning around during bosses and having different phases of the battle. There are background ships you collect, which might have made me think it was more zoomed in than it was, and it has an option for player 2 so it might be it, still trying to decide.

This boss especially though, seems familiar, especially at 2:27. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abRrOq4HyH0&feature=plcp

1:16 of this video also seems familiar, especially when going over the clouds seconds later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHjyWMVIav4

It also has green crescent shaped weapons, and there might have been a stage end screen like at the end of this game I think. The rest of the game though is largely unfamiliar, I might not remember it well, and either I am thinking of something else when I thought of the trees and underwater place, or this is just a game that has similarities to the one I'm thinking of. Maybe it's another game in the series, if it's part of one? Does anyone know games that play similar to this one?
