Kid's book, "early reader" style. Very short chapters, each one showing a different event. It was about this boy, who I want to say had kind of a weird name, but I may be wrong there. He hung out with a neighbor girl, who I want to say was a bit younger and kind of bratty.
I remember a two chapters fairly vividly...
1) The kid gets obsessed with the idea of royalty whilst he and his mom are at the mall. They go to a few stores with "royal" sounding names, including one called "Mattress King", in which he tries to figure out who the rightful "king" is. The two men that own the store are twins, and the kid says only one can be king and wants to know who is older, and the twins say their mother was so excited to have twins, she couldn't remember who was first. At the end, the kid is out of his royalty phase, and when his mom offers to take him to Burger King, he declines, because the name sounds 'royal' and he's "over that" now.
2) A Christmas-themed one, in which the kid and the neighbor girl run into a guy at a restaurant that looks a lot like Santa Claus. The neighbor girl is upset because, being Jewish, she doesn't get to celebrate Christmas. She goes to him and complains, and he points out that she gets things for Hanukkah and tells her not to be greedy. It's made very very obvious that this man is not, in fact, Santa Claus, but just a nice old man willing to help the kids out.
It was out when I was in third grade, so 2003-2004 at the very latest. My teacher had it in her class, and it was my favorite. I'd love to find it again, and if anyone could help, that'd be great.
