Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Folder, please. This is too long for ATT. (and may not belong here at all; we're still trying to work out how the trope even works)
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallI’m with War Jay 77. This ATT needs to be closed and the examples should be put back. The page being "too long" is not a justified reason for deleting obvious examples of Brian's hypocrisy.
Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say to put the examples back, I didn't even know they were cut, I just realize that discussing Hypocrite on ATT is inherently unproductive since nobody can agree yet.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallNobody is putting words in your mouth. There's no need to be rude.
I agree with you that this ATT should be deleted, but I was the one that suggested that the examples should be put back. I noticed that there was some bias when it came to the deleting of the examples because that one troper deleted all the Brian examples but left the examples of the other characters up.
I also agree that it’s unproductive to discuss the hypocrite trope because in my opinion I feel like people just delete them because they are biased when it comes to characters they either like or hate. Like for example, last week, tropers wanted to delete the Sam example from Danny Phantom despite her hypocrisy being blatantly obvious with facts that prove her hypocrisy.
The trope is obviously about characters that go against what they preach and I noticed that people on here are too sensitive when it comes to characters being called out for their hypocrisy.
Edited by MsCC22I don't think anyone's "too sensitive", it's just that the severity of the hypocrisy can either be major enough to document or...very inconsequential at best, which is the root of the issues with how the trope is issued AFAIK.
To give my two cents, I think (aside from there being way too many sub-bullets) that the list mixes too many of Brian's more talked about hypocrisies with things I don't think many people have thought about since they're either referring to decisions he made several seasons beforehand or are ignoring hypocrisy nods/greater outside context. I can't say for sure which examples are valid though since I rarely watch the show.
Edited by Coachpill Your goateed philistine is sashaying towards us. | 🧱People are too sensitive regarding the topic of Family Guy guy though. The show gets a bad rep on this website with the way tropers complain so much. It’s even in the sandbox when it comes to works that require cleanup of complaining. Even mods had to step in the get rid of the complaining a few times.
Years later, I completely see what that redhed troper was saying in the forums: people are too sensitive these days.
Again, why should the Brian examples be deleted, but the examples of the other characters being hypocrites stay?
Edited by MsCC22I'll focus on the examples at hand.
- Not a hypocrisy, that's just a lie.
- Not enough context
- I fail to see the connection
- Needs more context, "willing to" is ambiguous.
- Not helping someone doesn't correlate with criticisim.
- "Quagmire's Mom" one sounds valid to me, but the "fallings" need to be elaborated.
- Not a hypocrisy, as pointed out Brian has commitment issues.
- Not a hypcrisy, he just changes his mind.
- Brian himself is not a daycare teacher so he's not just as responsible. It also doesn't say what the police call was for.
- That's just Brian being shortsighted.
- He has getting a girl be a bigger priority than getting an air conditioner, so what.
- Ok, this one sounds fine to me.
- Possibly counts? Supporting gun control while keeping one for yourself is kinda weird.
- Sounds valid.
- Maybe valid? Is Brian calling out xenophobia in general or only a dog one?
- Not enough context
So, unlike with the Sam case, I agree with most of the deletions, because those don't mention what moral standard Brian is supporting while making himself an exception.
Edited by Amonimus TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupPersonally, I'm fine with examples from "Family Guy Lite", "Peterminator" and "Short Cuts" being put back. The others could use more fact-checking as they sound like just listing character flaws.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI’ll re-add all the examples that you found legit (especially the quagmire’s mom one) but I’ll rewrite them in the process.
EDIT: With the Rita example, I’ll add about how he cheated on Rita despite Rita being nothing but giving to him (despite Brian criticizing Peter for paying Lois back with shit despite Lois being good to Peter).
Edited by MsCC22I want to argue that the "In "Boy (Dog) Meets Girl (Dog)" is an example because Brian complained about dog competitions being degrading and demeaning, but he was all too willing to degrade himself by entering another dog competition for his own selfish benefit. It also shows that Brian will only abandon his own principles when it will benefit him selfishly, not because he has to.
