As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site. Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it. Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.

Important things to know:

  • We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
  • Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
  • Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.

Agreed. I make an effort to see when the last one launch and try to leave at least 4 hours between launches, as we have had 4-5 launches in a day.

I came, I saw, I waddled.

One of the things I wanted to do for the upcoming TLP updates was add a “last 5 tropes launched” area right under the latest trope. Since the very long list of TLP changes should hopefully increase the number of tropes launched, a latest 5 launched will be needed. Although I’m not sure what to do exactly if it increases beyond that.

That would also be nice. Given that some articles can be overlooked out of simply being out of a user's time-frame/time-zone.

Maybe launch hours on the launched overview?

While I understand and even agree with this issue, that's not a great solution. I'd be even more upset if I went to launch and was told I couldn't for hours. I typically plan my launches when I know I'll have some downtime after for the crosswicking and such. Hours-long delays would make that difficult and more frustrating.

I think kory's suggestion of having the most recent 5 tropes would be more than enough to cover the issue without causing other frustrations.

I honestly believe everyone launches to have time to put in the work for crosswicking... I made the wish because 2 out of 3 drafts launched have suffered this, and I've seen others too, so it seems "funny" that this happens after literally planing a launch for more than 5 days in advance, with 24 hour and 30 minute reminder to go along with it. Not to mention a linked timeframe. I did consider how frustrating it would be to be on the other end of this problem, but I guess nobody likes people who cut in line/traffic... which is very much a thing akin to The Golden Rule.

Now, I'm not disfavoring Kory's idea but I still think at least 1 hour would be great. On the other hand: a cycle through all the last 5 tropes would also be interesting — something that would reduce all the articles to a specific amount of time to feature that is equal between them (like a lot of store sites do with whatever they are selling).

While I myself have had issues with "launch sniping" in the past, I agree that having a cooldown seems a bit much. It comes off as first-come first-serve from a different angle, in that people will just be fighting to be the one to launch when the window is up; I can see a scenario where someone has to wait hours for their long awaited launch while others repeatedly snipe them every hour. And that's just as unfair.

I think the 5 trope list is fine enough; not only would it avoid things getting too competitive, but assuming there won't be 6+ in a single day (which rarely happens), every new trope will have at least a day in the limelight anyway.

It seems everyone I've talked with has experienced this phenomenon negatively. When I thought about writing this, I considered a queue system for launches built into TLP and maybe a carousel-like widget on the first page to show each article for an equal amount of time — so each idea has potential.

I do agree on that second point. However, what measure would there be to prevent multiple launches (6+) in the same day, all of them counting, if not relying, that they will be one of the 5. And maybe equally important, how would one plan a launch for a specific date meant to be symbolically representative for that article. It looks like it would only displace the problem elsewhere so maybe a combination of all these solutions would be advisable.

I'm still against the idea of any sort of delay. I went back through September and there were only two days that had more than five items launched. Changing the front page to display the last five (can be more, but that might be cluttering and reduce the effectiveness of displaying them at all) should more than address the issue.

I'm sorry, I'm still seeing problems with that idea (alone).
