— so my guess is that it is this book, part of a series called "The World Of The Future"

As a kid in the early Nineties I read a big hardcover educational book about robots. It covered current real robotics, hypothetical future robots, and robots in science fiction. It discussed the difference between "robot" and "android." It had a couple riding in a futuristic car playing chess while the computer brain did the driving. But I mainly remember the beautiful full-color illustrations of possible robots and their inner workings, which were probably done with airbrush and looked stereotypically Eighties (or maybe late Seventies). I'd love to find this book so I can scan those.
I thought this book was Robots: In Fact and Fiction by Melvin Berger, but I ordered that and just got it today and the illustrations are totally different from what I remember. It's possible that what I've described is really two or more books that my imperfect memory has merged into one.
