Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.

I don't understand what you mean by that. What If?, Split Timelines Plot, Point of Divergence, In Spite of a Nail and Butterfly of Doom don't work the same as For Want Of A Nail, so I'm asking if there's another trope that could be used instead or if I should add things from For Want Of A Nail to the Alternate Self trope?
On that note, I noticed that Butterfly Effect was redirecting to the disambig page and redirected it to Butterfly of Doom. Hope nobody minds.
Trust me, I'm an engineer! If you're looking for a trope, you can try trope finder.
Tabs' point is that disambigs only target the wicks we know some examples will be pointing to; we can't make an exhaustive list since not everything is a trope.
Alternate Self may work. I already see it used occasionally for these works on the related tab. However, that's more about the existence of an alternate self, not an explanation of what differences occurred and why.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIf an example cannot fit in any of the tropes or items listed in a disambiguation page, then there's a chance that the example pertains a kind of scenario or situation that is Too Rare to Trope. If such is the case, then the example cannot be added anywhere at all, I'm afraid.
135 -> 180 -> 273 -> 191 -> 188 -> 230 -> 300 -> 311In the case of For Want Of A Nail, the problem was more the opposite — too many of the examples amounted to "if this minor thing hadn't happened, then things would have unfolded differently", which falls into People Sit on Chairs with shades of Speculative Troping.
That's fair and I agree is annoying, but I'm looking for a replacement for how For Want Of A Nail is used on pages like MCU: Peter Parker Variants.
Alternate Self only applies if the canon universe/timeline exists in the work. Adaptation Personality Change or it's sub-tropes seems the best fit for what you want otherwise.
For troping purposes, "adaptation" is used to mean "any work that makes an adaptation to a source material."
My musician pageIt takes a source, and makes a change. That's all that matters for the trope definition.

So For Want Of A Nail is apparently not a trope anymore (something I disagree with, but fine), and I've got a problem. Many of the alternatives offered don't really fit with some of the examples used for characters, most commonly when describing the differences between the main version of a character and their AU self. Should these differences be put in the Alternate Self trope or can anyone think of a different trope that could be used?
