The main problem with Bittersweet Ending is that it has suffered gravely from misuse, as many examples boil down to "The Big Bad is defeated but [insert 1600 words explaining why everything else is a downer]". Sometimes a work or season ends with the Big Bad defeated and still lead to a Downer Ending, but most tropers don't understand this. Ultimately, it all depends on the tone of the work by the time it ends (for example, have the good characters accomplished more than what they lost? Was it all for nothing? Or worse, did they lose everything they were fighting for?)

Now, I haven't seen the movie, so I'm not familiar with its ending. However, if you feel that the happy results outweights the sad ones, then Bittersweet Ending is probably more fitting (of note is that "Ray of Hope" Ending only applies when the ending is unambiguously sad but there are hints that it'll eventually lead to a happy one).

EDIT: Typo fix.

Hmm, that does make sense.
