It's not a Karma Houdini, they paid a price even if they felt it was worth it. It might still be a case of The Bad Guy Wins.

Though this question would be better suited to the "Is this an example?" thread.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

i think we have Pyrrhic Victory to cover that, so it probably wouldn't need to be Karma Houdini

It may also count as Meaningless Villain Victory, depending on the morality of the person who dies.
