Wikipedia describes "Seventh (2005–2017)" and "Eighth (2012–present)", so for the lack of better knowledge on the topic either edit feels odd to me.

... because both "2004-2017, 2011-present" and "2004-2011, 2011-2017" contradict it.

The discrepancies in the start years are because in both cases, a handheld system (the Nintendo DS in 2004, the 3DS in 2011) came out a year ahead of the first new console.
