Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Is Creator Backlash really only about disliking the entirety of a work? I've often seen it used for when a creator dislikes specific aspects of a work, or disagree with how their work is released (i.e: going straight to VOD during the pandemic). With that in mind, I'd say this would be a valid example, but if it isn't, I guess it could be moved to Wag the Director.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."^^It is specifically about the whole work. At least from what I can tell from looking at the main page it is about disliking "a work" in retrospect.
That is just a few examples. These make it seem like it is about the work as a whole.
Even then again this entry doesn't seem like she is ashamed or even dislikes the work personally but just rewrote dialogue.
Edited by Bullman Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadThe new entry is more clearly on the topic, so now we can safely assume that Jenna Ortega probably doesn't like her work on the show. But it seems like she hated it from the beginning, I'm not sure if that's allowed or not, uh... Anyway, considering how much she emphasizes her problems with the script I think Wag the Director might work better
EDIT: Also, the two bullets should be merged into one. Just that.
Edited by SoyValdo7 ValdoI didn't think of it like that. It is a bit more clear. Though I should note that I just looked at the page and this is already covered by a Wag the Director entry.
- Wag the Director: Jenna Ortega stated
that she "put [her] foot down" in season one with regards to writing and character beats for Wednesday that she felt were inconsistent, to the point of refusing to say certain lines or changing them right before filming.
Ortega: Everything that Wednesday does, everything I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle? It made no sense. There was a line about a dress she has to wear for a school dance and she says, ‘Oh my god I love it. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ I had to go, ‘No.’ There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they’d be like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I’d have to go and explain why I couldn’t go do certain things.
I still feel it fits WTD better but thinking it over it could be both. But do both need the quote.
Edited by Bullman Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup thread^^ How is this mergerd version
- Creator Backlash: In the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Jenna Ortega reveals she disliked most of the writing about her character, like the dialogue and the love triangle. She was also reluctant to accept
the role at first because she feared it would affect her acting career. She certainly would have preferred the show to be "a nice little gem" than a a global phenomenon.
Jenna Ortega: "I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to on ‘Wednesday'. Everything that Wednesday does, everything I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle? It made no sense. There was a line about a dress she has to wear for a school dance and she says, ‘Oh my god I love it. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ I had to go, ‘No. There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they’d be like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I’d have to go and explain why I couldn’t go do certain things.”
Or without the quote:
- Creator Backlash: In the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Jenna Ortega reveals she disliked most of the writing about her character, like the dialogue and the love triangle, with her refusing to read some lines or having them changed. She was also reluctant to accept
the role at first because she feared it would affect her acting career. She certainly would have preferred the show to be "a nice little gem" than a a global phenomenon.
Alternatively, we can divide the example like this:
- Wag the Director: Jenna Ortega stated
that she "put [her] foot down" in season one with regards to writing and character beats for Wednesday that she felt were inconsistent, to the point of refusing to say certain lines or changing them right before filming.
- Creator Backlash: In a interview with the The Times U.K. Jenna Ortega reveal that she reluctant accept the role of Wednesday at first because she feared it would affect her acting career and that she ended up doing it because Tim Burton was involved. She certainly would have preferred the show to be "a nice little gem"
than a global phenomenon.
EDIT: Adding a little more.
Edited by SoyValdo7 ValdoSo am I good to add the ^^^. I'm guessing I should wait for some more opinions first.
Edited by Bullman Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadThe thing that feels off to me is that Ortega is criticizing an aspect of the work that was not under her control. I've always understood Creator Backlash as creators throwing shade on their own work, as in, things they were responsible for. Ortega (an actor) disliking the writing of the show does not mean she is judging her own contribution to the finished product negatively. Filing this as Creator Backlash seems to adhere more to the letter than the spirit of the item. I don't think Ortega's statements on the show should count as Creator Backlash if she did not explicitly criticize her own contribution.
Looking through CreatorBacklash.Live Action Film, it does accept actor examples. Just a couple of grammar points:
- In a interview with [remove: the] The Times U.K. [comma] Jenna Ortega revealed that she was reluctant to accept the role of Wednesday at first because she feared it would affect her acting career [comma] and that she only ended up doing it because Tim Burton was involved. She certainly would have preferred the show to be "a nice little gem" rather than a global phenomenon.
Okay so I gave it a few days and since most were on favor of the split and only one was against I split them and swapped in the rewrites with a link here.

So on Trivia.Wednesday I deleted
this entry:
I removed it after discussing it here
, because Creator Backlash is where they express dislike for the whole work and not just one aspect. Impaler added
this new entry for it
Again this is just one aspect (the writing) rather than the show as a whole like this trope is supposed to be and even then the quote doesn't scream despised. Plus I fail to see how the second bullet is backlash personally. Honestly this feels more like Wag the Director.
Can I get some more opinions on of this counts?
