Could it possibly be Pathologic? I haven't played it, but it sounds like it fits with the apocalyptic epidemic thing. I can't find anything about red growths, though.
No. I'm fairly certain that it either ended up cancelled or hasn't come out yet, but I'm not sure. The cooperation/team-based aspect was billed heavily, from what I remember.
Also, as far as "Old", I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 2008-2010 for the issue date. Maybe as recently as 2011, but I don't think so.
Edited by NezumiIts funny, I was just reading about this game yesterday: Journey.

sounds very much like what you mentioned. I have not played it, so I don't know about the growths you referred to, but there do seem to be a lot of red-hued things throughout the preview video. It is a post-apoc scenario as well. And the multiplayer aspect seems to be quite novel. In fact, I was checking it out yesterday because I had just downloaded and played a game called 'Way' which had a similarly engaging multiplayer aspect, where you can only gesture at your teammate. But the 'Journey' game just came out I think, so maybe not.
Edited by surlyslurI'm not sure it was about multiplayer so much as a sort of "cooperative" singleplayer or simply major NPC interaction, but it's been too long for me to be sure. Know it wasn't Journey, though. The apocalyptic/disaster scenario was a fairly recent event, and it was very much in a realistic style rather than Journey's more artistic presentation.
Again, I don't know that it ever came out or will ever come out... but I'm curious about what it was all the same.
On a hunch, I checked out The Last Of Us, and it sounds like this might have been early coverage of that, or the project that would eventually become that. Some details don't seem quite right, though. I guess I can just hope someone had that issue of Game Informer and knows what I'm talking about, or hope I find it at some point.
Edited by NezumiOn a hunch, I was checking out I Am Alive. I'm pretty sure it's been in development hell for a while, and was near release at one point in 2008 or 2009 before being dragged back into development. It's been in development for over a decade, if I remember.
I found this on a Last of Us search. Though the concept art doesn't show anything red like the blobs described, it still is similar thematically:

Crytek also supposedly cancelled a similar game they had in development.

Which, apparently, the guy who was heading the project left Crytek and joined Naughty Dog after that, so it could've been an earlier incarnation.
As for I Am Alive:
It actually was The Last Of Us, it was an extremely early build of the game, and has undergone massive revisions, they mentioned that in their next feature of the game. I have both magazines, but I'm not sure when it was featured

I remember reading a preview in an old Game Informer about a game where you'd play a survivor of an apocalyptic scenario involving weird red growths on the environment (something like fungus or the Blacklight Virus growths from Prototype), working together with other survivors to try to get to safety. It was also promised that the disaster would not be an alien invasion. I can't remember the name or if anything ever came of it, though.
