Generally, when an example is worded that wonkily ("seriously close to to the border"), it's not an example. It could possibly be Values Dissonance, though that is a stretch, but not Abusive Parents.

The fact that it ends with "to be fair", along with words like "probably", "could be", etc. are giveaways that it's not an example. Also, it's never specified what "things" he says and does.

Donner has definitely been interpreted as abusive by modern viewers; whether that was intentional or not has never been clear.

It's definitely Values Dissonance at most.

Frankly, I always just interpreted Donner as a character with realistic flaws. He does want what's best for Rudolph (and was completely right that letting Rudolph's nose be discovered would be a bad idea), but isn't entirely sure what is best.

To be fair, being well meaning doesn't exclude someone from still being abusive, what matters is the impact on the other party. If their actions are consistently harmful, then it's abuse regardless of what the intention is.

Of course, back when this was made Donner might've just seemed like an average, strict father.

Abusive Parents isn't a YMMV trope, so the question is, did the work intend to show Donner as abusive?

I guess I'll need to watch it again to see if it's a valid example. But if it is, it shouldn't be worded like that.

Check out my forum game: Rate the above YMMV.
