Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

The note was added by Derv0s B 2 (who probably isn't the author) at page creation.
This seems like a textbook violation of The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours. Creators don't get to decide how we trope their work.
One of the points of this website is to, you know discuss tropes that are used in a work. Plus, spoiler tags are there for a reason. If it's impossible to discuss tropes about work without spoiling a First-Episode Twist that makes it hard to talk about it spoiler-free, then put an Unmarked Spoiler head instead.
So that header is probably breaking a few rules here.
Edited by Cutegirl920fire CG for shortThey're still active as of today; why not call Derv here?
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallThe "Be aware, trope entries..." header was installed by me due to my concern that the fic's tropes page if it described too many of the story's plot details or just gave summaries of large chunks of scenes, it would draw potential readers away from the actual fic. I wasn't aware of the header's use violating any site rules I knew of at the time, and admittedly my intent was to see if it would catch on assuming it wasn't called out as unacceptable; but I would've been then, and am now, okay to discuss it if tropers feel it's rule-breaking practice.
I can see what some folks here mean about how following that heading seems to render tropers unable to discuss on the page how the tropes apply, and in fairness it appears the heading has something of a bad case of Exact Words which stifles trope discussing practice. Looking back at the header again, I suppose it could be amended to (if it isn't deleted entirely) something more along the lines of:
- "Be aware, plot details in trope entries are deliberately relatively minimal, to both keep spoilers to a minimal and actively encourage page viewers to read the actual fanfiction. When adding details to trope entries, make sure they're relevant to the trope in question."
Also, I'd like to clarify now in response to Exxolon's concerns, to avoid Hrodvitnon getting any undeserved negativity or backlash, I am not the author of the fic itself.
Edited by Derv0sB2On the other hand, no-one owns a wiki page. You may have kept entries "relatively minimal" when you created the page, but if someone else adds a fleshed-out example (and it fits the trope and has nothing else wrong with it), it should stay. So the warning will gradually become untrue and pointless (and maybe has already, I haven't looked at the page in detail).
The way to go on this is to have fully described tropes with the relevant parts hidden by spoilers. Having trope entries that are not ZCEs is a basic requirement at this website. Tropes need to be explained so someone who knows nothing about the work will understand why it appears on the list. Hiding the spoiler bits is fine, but leaving them out entirely is a no-no.
If you want to see an example of how it’s done, have a look at the Perry Mason works page.
I agree. We're not an advertising service for fics, films, books, comics, or anything other than tropes. This wiki's fandom is tropes, and the collection and cataloguing thereof.
If, after reading a fic, someone wants to come here and add tropes they should do so fully. By the same standard, if someone wants to come here and read tropes then they should be able to do that without ever needing to consume the media for our tropelist to make sense.
See Weblinks Are Not Examples. If you've to read the fic to understand it, it's ZCE.

Abraxas (Hrodvitnon) has a huge commented out header (takes up almost the entire screen on desktop, which has the instructions "Be aware, trope entries listed on these pages are deliberately shortened, to both keep spoilers to a minimal and actively encourage page viewers to read the actual fanfiction. Please do not extend entries, and try to avoid going into unnecessary details."
Is this kind of thing allowed? It seems like this encourages Zero-Context Examples- the page itself has a number of them, which I've commented out.
