Sounds like a possible entry for the Urban Legend of Zelda trivia page. Do you think you might have read about it there?
When I think of games about secret messages The Seventh Guest comes to mind, but I don't specifically remember any heated discussion about loose ends in that game. That and I can't remember if the mansion even had a bar in it.

There's this game with an unsolvable code hidden in it that may or may not be a code. I haven't actually played the game in question, but I read about it somewhere on T Vtropes, and it's bugging me to no end. It's a 3D game, but I'm not sure if it's third-person or first-person. It strikes me as present-day, maybe a bit rustic. The scene I remember is a pub or bar. Behind the wooden bar there are an array of plates and bottles and ornamental stuff, set in little white cubbies in the wall. Apparently, the rest of the game is so full of secret messages that most fans thought this arrangement of objects was a code too? But it baffled them to no end. I remember Baudot code being brought up in the discussion. There was specifically a screenshot of this scene and it sticks in my mind. Anyone know what game this is?
