From what I can tell, "bytes" are about the same as 1 character. So 1 character = 1 byte. So just calculate the character amount.

Where did you see this statement? We don't recall people talking about pages in terms of bytes much outside the too-long page thread.

Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.

A few threads in various pages decided that 40,000 bytes was a good amount of bytes in order to split off a character page. Especially this cleanup thread.
