I can't speak on special characters, but to my knowledge all of the hindsight tropes are "Funny Aneurysm" Moment (a funny moment becomes sad/depressing/harsh), Harsher in Hindsight (an already rough moment gets worse), Hilarious in Hindsight (a certain moment/thing becomes funny), and Heartwarming in Hindsight (a certain moment/thing becomes heartwarming). Basically, it's the trope where we experience a certain development in a story a certain way, and then something later on makes it land differently in hindsight.

For instance, the Trope Namer for FAM is Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the titular character's mother gets a headache and asks if it's an aneurysm, and Buffy responds that it better be a "funny aneurysm". Five episodes later, her mother dies from a brain aneurysm, which makes that joke downright sad in hindsight

All those tropes require a) the passage of time and, b) a subsequent real world event that puts the work in a different light. Funny Aneurism Moment is when a joke in a work is rendered sad/depressing thanks to subsequent events (the page image shows a cartoon from 1992 with a plane sticking out of the WTC towers as an example).

  1. hind·sight — understanding of a situation or event only after it has happened or developed.
    • A "hindsight trope" is any trope where the perception of a work is changed by an event (in or out of universe) that occurs later than that work.
  2. Special characters refers to nonstandard symbols, for example; an accent over a letter or a money symbol other than $ (such as for yen, euros, or pounds).

Harsher in Hindsight and Hilarious in Hindsight actually had redirects named after "Funny Aneurysm" Moment ("Unfunny Aneurysm Moment" and "Reverse Funny Aneurysm Moment" respectively), so the reason they're all "hindsight tropes" is because they're all sisters to FAM.

Edited by mightymewtron I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
