The detail about it being set in modern day makes me think this is the Hallmark mini-series Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story.

That was my initial thought, too, but the entire premise is based on the fact that time moves much slower in the giant's world, so they still have Middle Ages tech.

It took a while, but I finally found the answer. It was Beanstalk, released in 1994 under Moonbeam Entertainment.
