Real Life should never be the biggest part of any article. If it is, it needs trimming or removal. Critical Research Failure is inherently a "you did this thing wrong" trope, so a Real Life section attracts natter the way a rotting carcass attracts maggots.

Wouldn't any sort of news be more Cowboy BeBop at His Computer thing? Or am I misrepresenting that trope.

I'm pretty sure that Cowboy BeBop at His Computer is a subtrope for when media get critical details about a work wrong.

The biggest problem about Critical Research Failure is people forgetting the "Critical" part. There are still an awful lot of "this is an obvious error... to experts in this field" examples.

I'm thinking the current description, "comment that is so egregiously off-the-scale of inaccuracy that anyone with a cursory knowledge of the subject realizes the writers made the whole thing up" might be a little too weak. Allows overinterpretation of "cursory knowledge of the subject."

Seems to me that there should be more of a "reasonable person" or "layman" standard for inclusion. Like if your Ph.D sister, your grandmother, AND your 12-year-old cousin all immediately spot the error, that sort of thing.

It's why the thing was added a YMMV tag.

The Batman section in What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids? is really out of control.

Reposting from here.

For Character Derailment, should we do an Example Sectionectomy? The examples are mostly just complaining about character shifts you don't like. Seriously, look at the thing.

Unfortunately, as it's a subjective trope, one person's "Character derailment" is another person "character development".

You Fail Law Forever is full to bursting. One entry alone, Insanity Defense, took up almost my entire screen (a standard computer monitor). I'm pretty sure this needs trimming.

Yes, yes it does. I'm curious what should be done with it. It's set up as more of an index though, I'll go start a TRS thread for it.

Wasn't Character Derailment like character development, except is appears suddenly and without any reason?

Stealth Parody has some natter (plus X just X thing).

I've been wondering for some time re: Special Effect Failure if there's any chance of saving the patient, or if we'll have to resort to Example Sectionectomy.

It's potentially a wonderful trope, but everybody seems determined to turn it into Complaining About Special Effects You Dont Like. Bad examples come from many different directions:

  • Extreme nitpicking of the "In this $200 million blockbuster, when you watch the big fight scene at 1/10 speed, it's obvious that the laser gun is a fake!"
  • Extreme lack of perspective and failure to recognize that the special effects in a 1960 major-studio production might look unconvincing NOW, but they legitimately wowed people 50 years ago.
  • Stuff the audience would be highly unlikely to notice (because the skillful filmmakers were aware of the flaw and hid it well), but you can see it on your 20th viewing.

The truly delightful entries, the ones audiences laughed out loud at as soon as they appeared on screen, get swamped by all the other stuff.

When dealing with that, keep in mind that a lot of old Doctor Who stuff really WAS cheap and shoestring for its time.

Justin Bieber. I know that IJBM is supposed to be where complaints are, but that page is just getting ridiculous. People are literally saying that they are better than him and he deserves to die. I don't wanna cut the page because there are some legit questions on there.
