95% of the humor in the show would come across as just plain silly in a live action work. Bumi's armpit hair, Sokka's pratfalls, the exaggerated Eye Take's in the early episodes (which, incidently, is one of those things that were phased out as the series progressed). One of my favorite jokes was in the Grand Finale when Sokka went "I knew this day would come... Appa ATE MOMO!!!" and then crawled inside Appa's mouth, only to be spit out covered in slime. Hilarious stuff, but it just wouldn't work live action. They want the movie to be taken seriously along the same lines as The Lord of the Rings
From what I've seen in interviews and such is that Sokka is more Deadpan Snarker than Butt-Monkey/Large Ham, Iroh is more Old Master than Obfuscating Stupidity (The show had far more time to show it wasn't inconsistent characterization) and it has emphasized Aang being Resigned to the Call. None of those things are foreign to their character.
The thing is, Night is a fan of the series, and he is working with the creators to make this film. The man has made excellent movies before, so is it really that much to ask that people go in with an open mind before declaring this movie to suck?
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Wait, If most of the humor is being taken out does that mean...No Cabbage guy?
My Phineas and Ferb LiveblogYou fell for that? It's obvious that he was saying that to mislead you so that you're taken by surprise when it turns out that Cabbage Man is the Fire Lord.
Ah, but does that put Zoku's Heel–Face Turn before or after he finds out that the merchant of cabbage is the fatherlord?

I call forth Unlimited Stories!I just read that non-master TLA-firebenders need a fire source for firebending. Why? Average firebender in ATLA were not more powerful than their opponents from the other elemental nations. Taking away the ability to produce their own fire and not being dependent on an elemental source really turns fire bending into the weakest bending art, unless MSN improved other aspects of firebending (No Hollywood Fire). This change from the original bugs me almost as much as the racebending.
Lazy and patheticRealistically, an army full of firebenders could destroy their opponents effortlessly; the "balance" of the elements is uneven when one of them requires no source, spreads on its own, and is extremely dangerous in its most basic form. In the show, they appeared to be balanced because of Plot Armor and other contrivances; the fire was harmless, easily dodged or blocked, just knocked people backwards, et cetera... This is harder to portray in a movie than a cartoon.
I don't see the big deal; any named firebending characters will probably be unaffected by this change.
We're not just men of science, we're men of TROPE!If in the movie all the regular fire mooks need a source of fire to bend, I would really like to know how they managed to somehow successfully raid the Southern Water Tribe multiple times.
For one thing, it makes Hama's capture rather stupid. Even one waterbender could probably put out any fire within their reach, especially when their home is made out of ice. And how about when there were many more waterbenders in the South Pole.
"You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."People claiming the elements are "balanced" in the series confuse me. I had thought that the Fire Nation was so powerful because of the imbalance. They don't need a source, but the Earth and Water benders do. This would be why they targeted the Air Nomads first; airbending is the only other type that doesn't need a source (well, technically they do, but unless they go to space or something it doesn't matter).
They were made by rufftoon, one of the greatest Avatards of all time.

I saw a commercial which seems to suggest that the avatar is a legend that they aren't even sure exists. not like in the show, but like "no Roku".
The sad, REAL American dichotomyNever Trust a Trailer; it could just be advertising suits believing that explaining how the Avatar works is a bit much for a two-minute spot. I kinda agree; that's the kind of stuff you put in the movie. Trailers are for spoilers drawing people in.
Then again, it's not exactly far from the TV show. Everyone in the show knows about the Avatar, but after 100 years most people just thought he was dead and gone.
On a different note, my sister (who only knows about Avatar because I keep saying she should watch it) saw the trailer and said, "Is that that show you're always talking about? I want to go see that!" The trailer does look awesome; it'll probably draw in a fair number of non-fans, just based on that.

Well, something has to be cut to fit an entire season of episodes into one movie, and you can bet that most of those somethings will be the things that are least plot relevant. Since most (but not all) of the comedy falls under that category, it probably won't appear that much.
I feel bad for M. Night. No matter what he does, he's not going to win with the fandom.
