well that little tip helped a helluva lot. im lasting a lot longer now, but once the thunderproof mantle wears off and the 1-hit K Os start coming in it always snowballs...

its hard to get out of the habit of dodging everything i can and instead guard. on the bright side it definitely seems like the GS cuts through the thunder armor? most of the time?

I'm at a point where i never bounce off the kirin with a gs, period. I think charged attack have a pseudo mind's eye. Just focus the head and charge as much as you can and you should be good. So yeah, keep at it.

Also the best way to not cart is to wait for the mantle to recharge. If you have the ultra instinct mantle of the lunastra, you can alternate between them and won't have to wait long before one of them becomes reusable.

Life up 3 is also good enough To let you tank one hit at full health if you don't want to wait.

For Kirin I usually have the Quick Sheath charm fully upgraded and max the Critical Draw skill. Fighting Kirin is mostly finding the right time to strike, attacking, and then backing off and waiting for the next opportunity to strike. When I knock him down I usually try to hit him with a True Charged Strike.

M'eh, critical draw and quick sheath seems a bit of waste in world where the true strike massively outdamage the initial charge.

And it's not even that hard to consistently pull off on something like the kirin- the shoulder bash attack that lets you both power through almost any attack in the game while massively reducing the damage you take also lets you skip the intermediates strikes so you can dish true charges more easily. World GS does a pretty good job at rewarding you for trying to go for the true strike rather than stick to crtical draw spam imo.

Oh yeah I love the tackle move and the TCS. It's only against Kirin I do the Critical Draw spam. Makes him easier to fight.

While we're on that topic, when using the ultra instinct mantle, DO NOT, under any circumstances, try to tackle through the charging-up move of the kirin where he casts lightning on itself.

Went from 200 hp to zero with no warning. I don't know if that's a bug or the raw damage the attack deals through the tackle without the thundermantle, but it's a big no no

AT monsters just do stupid amounts of damage.

the shoulder bash of the gs keeps you alive through the dive bomb of a dying tempered nergigante. For like 25% of your max health. That's how strong the damage reduction is.

so.

my limited bounty for today is to kill lunastra.

how exactly do i do that?

15 minutes is a pretty tight time limit for a first encounter, and honestly im pretty baffled as to how to approach many of its attacks. the nova especially, do i need to fully deck out my setup with wind proof? cuz in my experience any less than max is worthless and i cant get that high.

The first quest, the 15 minute one, is merely to repel Lunastra; to get her low enough to fly away. There's another quest afterwards with a much more reasonable time limit.

Drink cool beverages to limit the Do T, bring fire mantle too. the dragonator becomes available after 5 minutes of fight so capitalize on that. she's weak on the wings for cutting weapons so use every occasion to hit those, she has crazy defense everywhere else.

"merely".

for all the difference that makes.

ive hit it with 2 boulders, hit with the dragonator, dealt as much damage as i can

i just cant kill it in time.

finally did it, after switching to the insect glaive, but ugh

i take back i said about kirin. kirins nowhere near trash tier when this puppy's in the running.

okay while i loathe roar spam and i find the mechanic infuriating, i have to admit teostra and lunastra have no other way of dealing with an insect glaive user.

sad to say, i wasnt able to bait out the mating dance of doom, despite my many attempts throughout the mission.

aaaand arch tempered kirin has been slain.

probably woulda been faster if i remembered the weapon's shortcuts, but for the most part it was a game of waiting for the temporal mantle to recharge and backing the fuck away when the thunderproof mantle runs out.

Iceborne itself. Not much on it other than being "a massive expansion" and that Nargacuga shows up at some point.

Hopefully the new continent's got enough biomes to include a few of the amphibious monsters from Tri that wouldn't make a lot of sense in a cold environment. Would like to see Lagiacrus and (Royal) Ludroth come back.

That camera shot of the beachside cliff in the Ancient Forest with a team of hunters and a Rathalos flying out to the sea reminded me so much of the trailers from Monster Hunter Tri and 3U. I even expected a Lagiacrus to jump out of the sea.

I hope my boy Tigrex is also coming along with his cousin Nargacuga.

Lagiacrus would be great. I heard they'd planned to include it earlier, but couldn't quite get it to work for some reason. If they got it to work, I'd be all for it.

Yeah they tried adding lagiacrus, but also said "Okay NEVER AGAIN" after failing to do so, sooooooooo not getting my hopes too high.

Otherwise, well, it's been a long time coming. I hope they get funky with the monster lineup. Narga's cool and all but he's a bit basic.

they gave up on lagiacrus because they were trying to shove him into wyvern forest, where it was overall to cramped and awkward to fight him. hopefully, with a map designed around him as one of the monsters would work better

If Lagiacrus does end up coming back, wonder if they'll find a way to have a callback to that one demo video where an unlucky Anjanath gets chomped on by the Lagiacrus.

I've been wanting Nargacuga added for a while, so I'm stoked. Of course under the new engine he'll be a royal pain, but I look forward to it. I also want them to add the goddamn Ancient Blade GS back.

God, can you imagine? Lagi's whole deal is using powerful and wide-ranging area-of-effect projectiles that effectively lock you out of consistent approaches. Fighting that thing in a tight space would be a nightmare.

Probably gonna get to trying to fight the AT Kirin soon. I have a lot of Kirin fights under my belt at this point so here's hoping it goes well. I plan on using my KO Sticky/Slice LBG Build I think.
