Dwarf Fortress, Nethack, and Spelunky.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.I have to lean towards Cave Story, if only because it is one of the few freeware games available for Mac OS X.
If more games were made available for the system, I would have more of a variety to choose from.

Cave Story. I you've tried this game and didn't like it, that's because you lack a soul.
Battle For Wesnoth, pretty good gameplay and graphics wise, although so far I've been disappointed by the dialogue and story quality. Specially since it seems to have a lot of potential. The music is pretty nice, though.
Ground Control. Free real-time tactics game with great graphics, sound, gameplay, script, and epic story and setting? Fuck yeah!

Legally Free ContentI was playing Knytt Stories the other day.
Darn, I haven't played it in so long. It's quite fun. Just not the challenge games. I appreciate the atmospherics far more than the platforming.

Anyone here played Bonesaw, The Game?
It's so good, I think it deserves its own page.
I might create one tomorrow, when I have more time.

It would be a lot easier for me if you imagine there's something funny or interesting here.I just mean that "it's better than crap" isn't a very compelling justification.
Well, I don't know if I've mentioned it, but I like Verge
, which is apparently by the same person. Huh.
The same person as Bonesaw? Seriously? I never would have guessed that in a million years.
I found Verge because it was an entry in the same contest which included Eversion and The White Chamber. Definitely those three were the best in show, though the "from primordial egg" game was also fun for a laugh.
Edit: And I found Bonesaw because its music was by the same guy who wrote the music for The Spirit Engine 2 (and probably 1), though that that's shareware, not freeware. Guy's a good composer.

G-Type
is pretty awesome. It's best described as Gradius meets R Type. Literally!

It would be a lot easier for me if you imagine there's something funny or interesting here.StepMania is my choice of addiction.
Assault Cube is also a good LAN shooter (mainly because it's small enough for a USB).
Also, Farbs
has ROM CHECK FAIL, probably one of the weirdest games I've played in a while.
Having just recently discovered Zero Punctuation, I have been playing the crap out of the Chzo Mythos games, The Art Of Theft included, as well as Twelve Thirteen. That man knows how to make a good game.

Charlatan: Hey wow Ad Astra is fun. Kind of a steep learning curve, but it's not too complicated and now that I am finally getting everything figured out, it's beautiful.
Related: That Oolite thing looks like it might be fun, too.
