I just want to see what people's favorite freeware games are, recommendations, etc.

My favorite freeware games are, in no particular order, Eversion, Iji, I Wanna Be The Guy, La Mulana, Sonic 3D Roboblast, Karoshi 2.0, Lyle in Cube Sector, and anything by Nifflas, Kyle Pulver, or Yahtzee.

And no, I haven't played Cave Story yet, even though I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm waiting for the Wii Ware remake to come out.

It would be a lot easier for me if you imagine there's something funny or interesting here.

Dude, we have one of these threads, too.

We have a forum search function. Use it.

WOOT LA MULANA!!!

Also, here's to Lyle In Cube Sector. A decent freeware castletroid. Needs a page, as does Eternal Daughter (which is a not-as-great and much harder freeware castletroid but also has an arguably better soundtrack and plot).

Also, just get a computer version of Cave Story. You'll appreciate it.

Wandering Hamster. I've been waiting ten years for this game to be completed.

Castle Of The Winds was made freeware a while back. You could give that a shot.

Cave Story, Barkley Shut Up And Jam Gaiden and... I guess Eversion but the 7th world was just brimming with assholish design choices.

Iji (yay, sudden death sector!), and despite never having finished the game, Nethack. I have fond memories of my polearm-throwing wizard from when I was particularly bored. Actually got to kill quite a few critters that way.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

English Ivy, I doubt James is gonna be working on Wandering Hamster any time soon. It's been in Dev Hell since the focus shifted from making the game to perfecting the engine...

.kkrieger, if only for the technical awesomeness. Sauerbraten's good if you want to make your own maps.

Also, Eversion is awesome.

Edit: Ooh! Anyone remember I'm O.K?

Cho Ren Sha 68k, A Sharp X6800 shooter made freeware notable for how well designed it it is. The music kick ass too.

Blue Wish Resurrection Plus, An obvious (and ugly) ripoff that is still a lot of fun to play.

(yeah, I like scrolling shooters, where did you get the impression.)

Cave Story is excellent, of course,

See you in the discussion pages.

Right now I'm loving the Hell out of Stepmania, which is pretty much a freeware DDR clone for computers. The best thing about it is that you can download new songs complete with step patterns (and make your own, although I still haven't messed with the editor much). I have 405 anime songs on mine. grin

the dice are loaded, the deck is stacked, the game itself will hold you back

I'm oddly enjoying MyBrute... it's a weird, pointless little time-waster, but it's oddly entertaining.

Holy crap. I just downloaded Iji and beat it. Went rampaging through and got stuck in Sector 5. Looked at Deceased Crab's Let's Play and found the exit. Decided to restart and do a pacifist run. Beat game. Is now 6 AM. Bed.

I need to start on Iji sometime.

Also, Stepmania is quite awesome. You can use it as a non-discouraging way to practice too, even if you don't have a footpad.

Eversion is nice to play, but I think it doesn't really have much staying power. Given that the gameplay isn't too insanely stellar and plot basically doesn't exist, it doesn't really hang in my mind for long.

What about Bolo?

And Meat Gone Bad?

And Snood?

I guess some of those aren't freeware, but I know they basically were such in my programming 1 class in high school...

Just got done with a pacifist run in Iji, and I think I screwed up somewhere. I've read that, in v. 1.3, you can get away with not killing anybody, but I ended up with five kills, two of which came during cutscenes and three of which were bosses. Asha the assassin was tough as nails with only the shotgun.

edit: Oh wait you can only hit that boss with bullet weapons. Of course.

I've played a tiny bit of Iji and, I know this sounds weird, but I appreciate things like her scream when she dies. It really makes you "feel the emotional pain" of messing up in the game, the same way that Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow's Death holding Soma's soul in the game over screen or Samus's scream in Metroid Prime really adds to the immersion.

I loved playing Bolo in middle school. Unfortunately, I figured out that you could carpet large areas in mines, then shoot them, thus destroying the terrain and making everyone wade through the water. Other people figured this out, and the game got dull.

I heard Iji screaming a lot in my pacifist run, since I maxed out her health and had her stand next to enemies using explosives to get them to blow themselves up so I could get their nano and not have it count as a kill. That noise got old quickly.

regarding Iji still:

I was forced to kill a couple people when I did a no damage run, I was pretty impressed that she apologises to some of the enemies she kills. didn't expect it, and also made you feel bad. actually, I like all the sound in that game. all the constant noise and screaming and explosions and music gives a real feeling of intensity and chaos.

haven't done a pacifist run yet, though. (I usually play pacifist) got all the posters and the bonus level, and I'm still not sick of it yet. I know how to skip all the bosses though, from doing lots of missions on the stage select.

this game is seriously cool. anyone who has not played it yet should... play it.

If you want a full pacifist run, you have to skip Krotera and Asha's last stand, and to do an extra area before fighting Iosa. Krotera requires simply killing less than five people in each of the first two levels and not breaking the truce in level three. Asha requires level 10 in Tasen, Komato and Cracking, which is kind of a drag for a pacifist; lucky you're taught the "nanofield reboot" right next to where you need it. Don't reboot until you've reached the storeroom on the right side of the roof and then gone ahead and kicked down the door below leading to the Devastator, or you'll have to reboot again. The Iosa thing requires less than five kills per level plus I believe you can't kill that very last Tasen guard in level 3 because she opens the door. The extra area you have to clear is brimming with assasins; you can let loose on them without tarnishing your reputation since they teleport away, but it's tough as nails. It'll be much easier if you can enter with the alternate modes of weapons 4 or 7. You don't have to do anything special for Proxima, who is a robot, or Tor, who kills himself. Other than the bosses, pretty much the only way to accidentally kill someone is with the Tasen Shredders; you can still use them, but not if there's Tasen Grunts around or anyone who's potentially wounded in your path and even when there aren't you still can't make multiple trips back and forth. And don't worry about nano; you won't max out your level, but the stuff you can pick up lying around or by swooping in to clean up after Tasen v Komato fighting gets you enough to beat the game.

Iji, hands down, if only for the music.

Battleships Forever too. I used to like the forums there too, but trying to get back into the shipbuilding after such a long time is... yeah.

Technically, the only thing you need to get to the underground part before the boss fight with Iosa is to not kill the last Tasen in sector 3. You can still go berserk everywhere else and still get to Deep Sector(?) that way.

Thanks to this very wiki, I have rediscovered Docking Station and it is now wasting time I should be spending on things like my final paper for applied linguistics. I just spent forty-five minutes training a pair of Norns and then copying their files, so I can hopefully use them as "teachers" in my other worlds... Gyah.

I'll play Iji once summer frees me up.
