MOD NOTE: There is a dedicated Three Houses thread here.

    original content
I figured it was high time we had a thread for everyone's* favorite turn-based strategy RPG, Fire Emblem. Hopefully whatever discussion we have won't be marred by a surfeit of hardcore fans going "dagnabbit you kids and your easy English-language Fire Emblems", unlike that on some other sites.

Anyway! Share your FE experiences, thoughts, hopes, and RAAGE.

Personally, I got hooked on the series with Sacred Stones after seeing Marth and Roy in Super Smash Bros Melee, and got Radiant Dawn and enjoyed that too, especially since it was significantly harder than SS. I really missed support convos though, since they were a big part of the series' charm- the base info conversations and gameplay made up for it though. I recently got Shadow Dragon, and I'd have to say it's not nearly as entertaining, mostly because the characters lack, well, character. Most of them get one join-up line with some scant hints of their motivations, and then that's it- they become depersonalized units, just tools for you to use. The levels are interesting and the reclass feature is really cool, but with such flat characters (not to mention a pretty bare-bones plot), it just doesn't do it for me. I'll still play it for the challenge, or if I get bored, but it's hard to feel the same enthusiasm I had for the other Fire Emblems I've played.

Anyway, enough of my ranting- your turn to talk!

  • Maybe not everyone's, but c'mon, hyperbole is what ALL the cool kids are doing these days.

I still remember that one time I walked into a used bookstore and saw a copy of the Nintendo Power guide for Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones for sale. Brought back some fond memories of beating that game for the first time.

...I miss Nintendo Power. I remember getting the last couple issues hoping that a localization date for Fire Emblem Awakening would be announced. I don't think the last issue ever had a release date, but it was still an enjoyable read even if I did feel a little sad that there would be no more issues.

I seem to also recall them listing a Breath of Fire III unbeatable boss as optionally beatable. I get the feeling that they don't do their research. tongue

I think I said this before somewhere on here but...

I think my idea of My dream version of a game = EVERYTHING! reached Peak ridiculous with Fire Emblem.

I wanted a Sword Lord, Lance Lord, Axe Lord, Tactician, Songstress, Magic to use rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock. Almost very none main charter class in history. Daggers and Punchers. And War Elephants!

Sep 2nd 2020 at 7:51:54 PM

I think you said it in the Random Thoughts thread.

We did get paper magic in Fates, now that I think about it.

No I mean there are five types of magic each one has two things its stong against and two things its weak against.

Sep 3rd 2020 at 6:28:31 AM

Ah.

Well, we did have the magic triangle in the GBA games. I should get around to playing Sacred Stones once I finish New Mystery.

Path of Radiance also had a variant of the magic triangle and Radiant Dawn had the two-layered magic triangle going on. Both didn't shift enough stats to swing anything, though.

Had a random dumb idea just now.

If they ever do a remake of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and wanted to make Gheb less rape-y, they could revamp him into something like Queen from One Piece, particularly the sillier aspects of Queen. The bit about using biological weapons on his foes is optional.

Clip below shouldn't have spoilers, but in case you really want to avoid the spoilers, the relevant parts are around 0:23 to 1:05.

Random question: how much knowledge of the pre-Blazing Blade games is there among the "non-hardcore" fanbase, if it's known?

Prolly what knowledge was divulged in Heroes and Smash at best.

People in general know who Marth is but not what he's like or what he did.

[up][up][up] The Fire Emblem fanbase comes in waves. Are you thinking more pre-Awakening, post-Awakening, or post-Three Houses?

I'd say Marth is decently known, because his first game was remade after Blazing Blade.

Ok, so I just found out that there is exists a page for the romhack The Last Promise. It could use some wiki magic and a character page, but is mostly alright.

Someone in this thread expressed interest in reading about my ideas for potential sequels to Three Houses, so here is a link to my post on the subject in the spoiler thread (warning for spoilers, obviously). More to come at a later date.

I've been replaying Sacred Stones on Hard. Will be going on Ephraim route this time.

So far these chapters are mostly "Seth does most of the work, while Franz, Vanessa, and sometimes Artur scramble to get the leftover kills."

Prologue: Nothing exciting here. Seth kills one bandit and the boss. Eirika kills a bandit.

Ch.1: Seth cut a path ahead, killing Fighters and soldiers, with Eirika following closely behind. Franz managed to get a kill from an enemy Seth left behind.

Ch.2: Vanessa spent most of the chapter rescuing the axe people and the village. She did get a kill on the archer, so that's something. Seth with an Iron Sword made fighting the mountain bandits less of a hassle. He also killed the boss. Franz and Garcia got some kills on the southern bandits.

Ch.3: Once the doors were opened, Seth equipped with Javelin spearheaded the team and killed or crippled multiple eastern enemies, then headed straight for the boss. Vanessa and Franz cleaned up the survivors. Colm and Neimi were able to kill the bandit guarding the chests, and Colm unlocked the three chests just in time when Eirika seized the throne.

Ch.4: Finally, a chapter that isn't filled with Axemen. Vanessa was able to fight fairly reliably here. She killed plenty of eyeballs with the Javelin. Seth cleared a path to the village and headed straight for the boss. Garcia was surprisingly awesome here. He ORKO'd three spawning zombies.

Ch.5: Garcia was again pretty awesome. He ORKO'd the soldier and with Moulder's help he cleared the western path. Seth was instrumental in distracting Joshua's buddies so Natasha could safely approach him. Vanessa was on village duty for this chapter, and she used a Dragonshield.

Ch.5x. I gave Orson a Javelin so he could fight off Archers and Mages efficiently. He could also OHKO Fighters with his Silver Sword. Ephraim also got plenty of kills. I forgot to confiscate Orson's stuff, which was a bummer.

Here's the current team. 0 reset so far.

Up next: The chapter that makes people regret not using Seth.

For Fire Emblem's 30th anniversary, Shadow Dragon is getting an official English localization, with turn rewinding, fast forwarding, and bookmarks. It'll release on December 4th of this year.
