I do like the HK 416, looks like I could keep all my familiarity with the M4/16 and get some improvements to the problems.
You would have laughed Touffel, I was at the clearing barrel this morning and just totally monkey fucked myself. Apparently in the car on the way back to station my selector switch pulled to Semi when it snagged on something, which I caught at the barrel. Then when I slung it I banged the paddle on my drop holster and had to re-clear the damn thing since I slid the bolt forward.. Then when I was getting ready to put it away, I extended the butt stock too hard and the bolt slid forward WITH NOTHING TOUCHING THE PADDLE!
I hate it when that shit happens.
That's the same SOP for us. We carry a round in the chamber with the safety off when it comes to our sidearms though.
But that's because the Beretta is one of the most awesome safe handguns out there. Great safety mechanisms, the only way my pistol is going off is something pulls the trigger.
Besides, my safariland drop holster obscures the trigger so in order to even touch it I would need to unsnap and draw it first, which already means I'm willing to shoot something.
I just had a Face Palm moment on the H&K-416. They are playing a little joke with the name. the H&K is shift away from AK 4 and 1+6=7 ak-47. Either that or I am far more imaginative then I have given myself credit for.
Who watches the watchmen? It's possible. Most engineers I know are very nerdy and would think that's hilarious.
Fight smart, not fair.Went to the range today with my new 226 in .40 S&W. Nice gun, manageable recoil. Don't like the fact that it doesn't have a safety, but it has a really tolerable trigger pull.
It's a rough enough trigger that I can pull it down halfway with no resistance, then it requires like 2 and a half pounds of resistance to fire, so I can keep my finger on the trigger pulled down, then ease it into a shot really nicely.
But from an officer safety perspective, the no safety part bugs me. I did get it for like 400 bucks cheaper than if it was new though.
Also put 50 rounds downrange with my 9mm Browning HP, great gun as always, managed to make a smiley face on the head of my target.

I don't really like anything Glock puts out. I've never liked the feel of any of their handguns, especially their compacts, and they have this blocky look I don't like. I call them Nintendo Guns.
My boss's favorite gun is his Glock Compact, it's just too small for me to get my hands around comfortably, and the barrel is so short that the muzzle jump is ridiculous.
Not a fan of Our Weapons Will Be Boxy in the Future are you?

Fight smart, not fair.I love the Beretta 92 just because of all it's nifty features. I like the grip well enough, though I'd like a personal rubberized one.. But it's got typical easy to use sights, the safety is ambidextrous and so big that it's easy to find and hit without looking at it, same for the slide lock. I hate fucked up slide locks.
I'm noticing that somehow, after using replicas of Beretta M9 and SIG P228 for a long time, I'm getting used to the slimmer 1911 more and more.
Also, I'm thinking about getting a silver Springfield MEU replica and making tsukamaki grips for it, but no way in hell I can figure a way to wrap the cord so the screw holes remain clear.

"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisNo, I don't want to take the grips completely off, I'm just thinking about a sort of Bling of War (also, you can't completely take the grips off an airsoft 1911 as the piece that keeps slide lock and safety from flapping around loose is mounted on a plate held by the left grip). I was thinking about grips similar to the ones Reinhard has on his M9 in Blade 2
◊.
I guess it's doable, but I'd have to get really flat cord (more like ribbon) and use glue so it doesn't come apart.
"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisHey, thanks, Captain Obvious! The problem was how to wrap it so the cord doesn't obscure the screw holes so I could actually screw the already-wrapped grips back on, and another was "how thin has the cord to be to fit and not get in the way of anything". Of course the fact that the grips in Blade are obviously sculpted from some sort of plastic doesn't help.
"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisIf you need a good plastic, I recommend polycaprolactone since it's cheap, very easy to play with and has decent strenght properties. Just heat it up till it's got the consistency of chewing gum and then shove it into shape.
Fight smart, not fair.I wanted to wrap it around the holes, but I'd have some problems with the lower ones - notch for the pin that holds mainspring housing would cause the cord to slip off. I could always cut a slit under the screw hole, pass both ends of the cord through it and glue them to the bottom of the grip, and I guess that's what I'll do.
Also, my dad called today, he's done with the SAA grips, but he scratched the frame accidentally. No biggie, knowing me I'd scratch it too sooner or later.
EDIT: Ninja'd. I want to use real cord and rayskin over walnut grips - it's cooler that way.

◊. The thing is damned accurate, and really, really stable. The closest I've been to having a little dakka is this ancient .22 Bersa 62 that jams with every 5-10 shots or so.
My older brother, however has just finished boot camp, and has told me about the HK 416.(Oh, us lucky norfags to have such a sweet gun) I has a want.
When in deadly danger, When beset by doubt, Run in little circles, Wave your arms and shout.6,5x55mm still sounds like decent ammo. If it's made to drop wild animals, and the bigger ones (I think) at that...
"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisHey, I was watching the Future Weapons thing on the AA-12, and the Frag-12 shotgun grenades, and I noticed the grenades were fin-stabilized for really good accuracy.
- How plausible is using fin-stabilization for plain slugs?
FSDS (Fin stabilized, discarding sabot) ammunition (slugs or traditional bullets) has been used in anti-materiel rifles like the .50. (Or has it? I've heard that's one of the ammo types for use on harder targets than trucks and people)
I'd imagine for short-ranged shotgun slugs it would improve accuracy, though at the ranges shotguns are used, it would be kinda wasted but I could be wrong.

See told you the HK-416 was awesome :P
