x3 I wonder if she is friends with Okina

Yay! I cleared the game! Wolf Youmu best Youmu. Her charged slash just destroys.
I was surprised to see that the Wolf spirit also wants to run from the final boss. I'd expected that to just be the Otter's thing.
There's no way for me to say this without it being bragging. But I kinda... beat the Extra Stage on my first attempt? This has never happened for me before. It's not that the stage was super-duper easy or anything (not the hardest Extra stage either), it just sorta clicked on that first go. I mean, Wolf Youmu is still best Youmu, so that was part of it, but still. I'm kinda flabbergasted at that. It's like "Yay!" but also "How?!".
OK, I think part of it (just part, but still significant) is down to the EX stage bug that was in HSIFS coming back. When I used a bomb during what I'm certain is meant to be a survival spell, the boss suddenly became a target again, so I was able to cancel the spell prematurely (just from the shooting I was already doing). I imagine there may eventually be a patch for that.

I have a friend who was also surprised to beat it on the first try. It might just be easier than usual?
The beast system is exceptionally powerful if you can get a flow with it (and Youmu in particular basically has 2 different modes that kill everything on screen for the duration). On the one hand, I kinda bombed and roared through most of the tricky spells, so there's a lot I wouldn't be able to capture. On the other hand, that option was made available to me, when a lot of other extra modes are very stingy with resources.
Not that I didn't enjoy the Extra mode, mind; was still a fun challenge.

I think this game is one of the easier ones on Normal, even without the animal spirit gimmick. Keiki has some really easy non-spells for a final boss, and her spellcards aren't that bad, either. Mayumi is tough, but compared to Clownpiece and the Backup Dancers she's not that bad.
Perfect Circle Shape can go die in a perfectly-circular hole, though.
Marisa Eagle ending is kinda funny.
Apparently the Primate Garden is just fine after the fight, and Keiki offers to let Marisa check out all the technology they have down there if she helps them reform the beast realm. Also, she's gonna make a life-sized action figure of Marisa, just for fun.
Boy, somehow I managed to miss the release of an official game. Such are the consequences of not being one with the internet.
I still think of the animal spirits system as UFOs done right but I do find them very distracting when the screen fills with items, which happens often. I find having to get/avoid them the right way as detracting from the main game.
That said I do like the patterns and character designs and themes, especially Cake's.
Also I remember ZUN or a character mentioned Hell as a dog-eat-dog world, metaphor aside that's super-fitting for the Animal Realm even though they're supposed to be different places.
As for the Extra stage, it's not just you. I didn't beat it the first time around (it did take me several tries) but I reached Saki's 8th spellcard, far better than any other first attempt (IIRC barely reaching Okina). I'd say her 8th and 9th spellcards and maybe Kutaka's 3rd spellcard are the only hard ones, with the stage part being comparable to MoF.
Edit: also I was surprised with how little catching up with this thread I had to do. It's really not what it used to be.

Most people nowadays went to other platforms, like Discord.
Volume 10 of WaHH is getting released on September 27th
I look forward to it.
Man, it still feels weird that WaHH is done. I was just getting into Touhou around the time it started.
Personally, it's like a stage of my life suddenly ended and I'm not really sure what to do with myself anymore. Maybe I'll get some closure from the afterwords in the volume release.

Friendly reminder we have 8(!) days til The Strongest Day! And not just any Strongest Day, the TENTH YEAR of 9/9 being The Strongest Day!
You are now free to feel as old as Eirin now.
Oh yeah, that reminds me, we passed the 10th anniversary of this thread just last week. Grats everyone.
Damn. Ten years of the Touhou thread... I remember starting to read it back when I first got into Touhou but it kinda took me like a year and a half to get through it. XD
But man, time sure does fly on right by without you even noticing it.
What? I thought it ended already?
In the magazines, yeah. They're releasing the volume version.
It's standard practice for comics in Japan. They release them chapter by chapter in manga magazines, then after a while release them bundled in tankobon/collected volume. The volume version usually has extra stuff, like bonus chapters and occasionally redrawn art.
For Wa HH specifically, it didn't run in an actual manga magazine but instead in a general anime magazine that's mostly articles about upcoming new series and interviews and stuff.
The Strongest Day is upon us! For the next 16 hours and 45 minutes post Cirno pics!
It's been a while since I've done a picdump, and Cirno Day is more or less the anniversary for when I got into Touhou, so...
