This is a thread for people who will not be or have not been on the site for a while, whether due to real life or to resist an internet addiction, the latter of which is encouraged within reason. Also, talk about the benefits/whatever of taking a day or a weekend off, or things to do when not online. TV Tropes ruining your life is nothing to be proud of.

Generally, expect the following from this thread:

  1. People announcing their departure or return.
  2. Moderators announcing a significant forum ban — not trolls or vandals, but someone people will notice and miss.
  3. Inquiries about an absent troper.
  4. Responses to inquiries about an absent troper.

I still feel that thumps should be allowed to expire and not count toward one's permanent record after awhile, but at the same time, it's not my site and I don't make the rules here.

A thump system that weights and ages offenses is something on our general wishlist but we are still reliant on good ol' Fast Eddie to do the work.

Of course. Glad to see that I'm not the only person here who would like to see such a system, especially since some thumps (Off-topic) ought to be counted less than a rudeness or rules thump, and a frequent contributor who averages one thump per month over five years shouldn't be treated the same as one who rarely posts but averages five thumps per month over the course of a single year.

I'm sure that this has all been taken into consideration, but I guess I just like to make my personal stances on such issues known.

As a note, USAF's oldest thump isn't even a year old. It'd be one thing to have a bunch of thumps sitting on your permanent record for a couple of years, after which you may have changed the behaviour for which you obtained them, but constantly accumulating new thumps through the year? That's an issue.

[up]And forum bans. When strolling through OTC, I encountered at least two of them. (Assuming that this post isn't Too Much Information)

I'm not saying this to imply that said guidelines weren't being followed. I just dislike hard-and-fast rules with bannings out of principle.

If I should just drop this conversation (or move it to a more appropriate venue), I'll do so. I'm sorry... :/

We don't have a hard-and-fast principle of banning someone with X number of thumps (except for the automatic system). If we did, we wouldn't have let Flyboy come back under a new name. However, when having issues with someone, examining their thumps helps us measure if they're willing to listen and how prone they are to disruptive behaviour.

This automatic system is what worries me. I just hope that it's calibrated in such a way that it is used very infrequently...

[up]What is being Google banned? Is that when Google no longer allows you to use its search engine?

[up]No, it means you cannot access TV Tropes anymore. You are just thrown back to the Google search engine page.

I understand it to be a synonym for IP-banned.

Google banned is when one is redirected to a Google page or something to that effect.

Anyway, bye bye, Flyboy!

Again.

I'll miss you!

Again.

See you around!

I obviously don't know everything, but in my personal experience, what happens is that whenever you try to access a page on this site, you instead get a redirect to www.google.com.

Dynamic IP addresses stink sometimes.

I can still use the Dynamic Nicknaming System I devised for you for a little while longer, Flymo!

Also, isn't this ban evading?

You've seen me on WB just yesterday, AHR.

And, yes, I suppose it is, in the strictest sense, ban evading. I know no other way of appealing, however.

Also...you get an email, to appeal to. I believe.

We don't take offence at ban evasion if all you do is appeal your ban. If you do other stuff while your main account is banned, that's ban evasion. Appealing is not.

I should leave... I've ruined a perfectly good relationship because of own selfishness.

If it was a perfectly good relationship, I highly doubt it will die because of a mistake.
