The current image is fanart of Sonic and Tails stuck on the "Barrel of Doom" section of Carnival Night Zone, Act 2.
... yeah, it should be replaced, maybe moved to an Image Links Wiki page. While a good example in itself, the image doesn't really work without context.

Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.I love the current image, but only for very personal reasons (when Sonic 3 first came out, I could never figure out how to advance past Carnival Zone).
Objectively speaking, yeah, people not that familiar with the game (or the level) would never be able to understand the picture, though that's a shame.

"...people not that familiar with the game (or the level) would never be able to understand the picture..."
Mm, I dunno, I am not at all familiar with the game (or the level) and I kinda got it. Sonic is stuck on a puzzle, Tails is off IMing or something. The player is ostensibly doing something... else. Not great, though.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.I'm pretty sure that it is highly difficult to make a picture for this sort of thing. There needs to be a solid option that all (or at least most) of us are aware of that was nearly impossible to find out without the guide.
However, I think that it won't work so easily as one may hope. We'll need a recognizable game and something that was considered impossible to find out without the guide, that clearly shows why it was impossible.
If we are going to have to use a picture, I presume we could try something like Ocarina of Time's Water Temple. Easily recognizable, clearly annoying to many players, and it shouldn't be too hard to find a certain spot that we all had trouble with (perhaps the infamous raising and lowering the water level?)
Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.Not everyone has played Oo T, not everyone is going to remember what it looks like, what happened in it, or even thought it was that hard if they did.
The image needs to show an audience reaction to be clear. Someone who can't figure out something without looking it up first.
I agree with rodney Anonymous. I have no knowledge of the game, but the context is fairly clear: The game characters are waiting around for the player to consult a guide and figure out what to do next. Perhaps another caption could help with that, but it's an OK image, I think. Not a great one, but serviceable unless anyone has something better. But as noted, it's a tough one to depict.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI would say we should use something that is hidden so well that its impossible to find and it looks it... I would say the Konami Code or something like it but thats a different trope.
or something with a code system.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Being an example doesn't make it a good image, the picture needs to show the trope.

Fight smart, not fair.I, too, have never played the game. While I couldn't tell what the puzzle was, it seems clear that the image is a puzzle that the player is stuck on.

Hello, tropers! I was viewing this article and was a bit confused with the current image. It's just Sonic and Tails sitting on {platforms?} The caption does a good job of explaining the image, but the image should be illustrative of the trope on its own.
