[up]The Heart of Ala Alba, maybe? In the sense that it only exists because he's at the center of it, and he kinda holds it together? I don't know.

Also, I had an interesting idea for a sort of fanfic-within-a-fanfic thing: The Library Club's Writing Workshop. Essentially, each chapter would be a brief story written by one of the Negima characters, and the rest of it would be comments by the Library Club girls. I think it would be fun to try to write in character as the students.

Another Decadent 31 segment, but this one goes in somewhat before the bit I posted earlier today.

The day had started out so nicely, too.

She'd woken up curled up beside Madoka in her bed, with far more than just their pinkies entwined. (Eeeee!) The only way it could have been better was if there was another warm form on the other side of her. But Misa had firmly indicated that such a turn of events was never ever ever going to happen, not even if Sakurako gave her puppy dog eyes for the rest of time, so she should just stop.

Saku still thought she could wear her down before graduation. She was a lucky girl.

Of course, with the new session starting in just a few days, it was important for them to get ready for their autumn cheerleading duties. They'd kind of slacked off on their training over the summer, what with one thing and another, and so it was imperative (in Misa's words) that they pick up the pace. So, eventually, she hauled her two smitten roomies out of their beds and into warm-up suits for a jog down to the football field.

They arrived just as everything went to hell all over campus. This had become distressingly familiar, so the three of them promptly took shelter in the gym locker room. If there'd been an opportunity to arm themselves, like there had been before, they'd have taken it, but as things actually stood, they were just a trio of athletic young girls, one of whom was admittedly very lucky.

And so it was that they were there when the demons came for them. Somewhat predictably, these were vaguely humanoid demons who had wavy tentacles instead of hands, and their intentions were distressingly clear. Fortunately, they were not terribly clever demons, and the cheerleaders were easily able to hide from them. Unfortunately, one didn't have to be terribly clever to block a door. So no matter how the girls hid, eventually, they were going to be found.

"Okay, don't panic," whispered Misa, who was clearly close to panicking. "There's got to be something we can do."

Slowly, Sakurako peeked out around the corner of the rows of lockers, to see that the majority of the demons were on the far side of the room from the three of them. There were four of them, she thought. That was sort of overkill, she thought. After all, there were only three of them, so what was the fourth one supposed to do while they were — she decided not to think along these lines anymore.

And then a plan occurred to her. "Hey, Misa," she said softly. "I bet I can deal with these guys. If I lose, and we survive, I'll be your servant for a month."

"Saku, what are you talking about?" Madoka hissed.

"And what if you do pull this miracle off?" Misa asked. "I'm not going to be anyone's servant —"

"Guess," Saku cooed, reaching up to tickle Misa's cheek.

Misa rolled her eyes. "Fine. If you pull this off, I'll give you both a freebie. But you won't. I bet you can't."

"Do I get a vote in this?" asked Madoka, looking a little alarmed.

Sakurako drew in a deep breath and closed her eyes. She didn't even come close to understanding her luck. It was just, you know, luck. Things went her way, most of the time. And when they didn't, well, it wasn't so bad. But this would be really bad, so she needed to be really, really, lucky, so she reached deep down inside herself, searching for her center as she had never searched for anything.

And then, before she could let self-doubt, paralyze her, she slammed the palm of her hand against the lockers they were hiding behind. Improbably, but not impossibly, they fell back, slamming into the next row, which then hit the next, and then the row behind which the demons were presently discussing their options, hitting them with the accumulated force of a row of dominoes and squashing them flat.

Madoka and Misa stared at this for a moment, before they slowly turned to look at Sakurako, who was smiling a silly grin. "Just lucky, I guess," she said, as blood slowly began to drip from her nose. And then she fainted dead away.

If you won't I'll slit your throat/Won't you please be nice?

[up]Now I just need to find the time to actually write the thing.

If I do get around to doing it, (which probably isn't anytime soon) which person should I do first?

  • Ayaka
  • Setsuna
  • Makie

I chose those three because I already have ideas for what they'd write.

EDIT: Updated chapter 3, marking the arrival of the first non-pony, non-Negima character.

[up] I say save Makie for a little while in. I'm sure her story would be something along the lines of a Tastes Like Diabetes version of Friendship Is Magic, and that seems like something that'd scar even Haruna. [lol]

Re: The end of Negimaru- My main problem with is is it makes the whole deal to be a "Shaggy Dog" Story. Certainly not worthwile enough to make up for all the Character Derailment (sorry, I know I've taken quite wild alternate takes on Negima characters before, but any of the girls but Eva resorting to serial murdering? Uh, no. In Clown Princesses in Amber, yeah, being such a fully different setting, but...) and Plot Holes (are you telling me a Post-Ku Fei training Negi couldn't really disarm Chisame without hurting her before she stabbed Asuna, who is also, you know, someone who could hand Chisame her ass in a platter without trying hard at all, without taking the stab for her?)

It has a reasonable lot of nice and emotional moments, mainly in the final book, but like I said, trying to tie it into the Negima canon at the end killed it for me.

[up][up]Oooooh no it wouldn't. I have other ideas. Although I might move it to one of the other girls if it fits better.

[up]Yeah, that type of derailment was my problem with it as well. It was well written, but I feel like it would have been a lot better if they had just used original characters.

Here's a Negima fanfic-related request: Help me come up with an epithet or two that are better than "Beloved/Darling Prince of Ala Alba" at describing Negi's overall relationship and importance to Ala Alba, both intimately and objectively.

In relation to everyone? Hard to come up with an uniform epithet, since AA is such a varied team, but in a strictly personal, one-on-one level, I've always thought it'd be nice having Sayo calling Negi "My Anchor to Life." Kinda corny and syruppy, but at the same time eager and sweet, just like Sayo.

Unequally, Continuation.

Negi breathed in and out as he stepped back into the designated fighting area, holding his staff tightly as Takane also walked in, with a confident smile.

"I remind you both of the terms for the fight," Itoshiki said. "There is no time limit, and victory will be reached through temporal incapacitation to at least a count of ten, forcing a surrender, or a decision of this most pathetic yet fair arbiter. I trust you will not go overboard with this, Takane-kun?"

The blonde huffed. "Please, Sensei! You know you can trust my better judgement!"

"............. Of course," Itoshiki said after an abnormally long and dubious pause. "Well then, whenever you're ready! Which should be just right now! GO!" He swung a hand down.

Negi dashed aside for cover, preparing an opening salvo as he ran. "Sagitta Magica, Una Lucis!"

Racing in the opposite direction even faster, and dodging the light attack with a surprising twist of feet, Takane raised her hands up, smirking while her blue eyes glinted dangerously. "Your poor little boy! Opening with such a weak attack could cost you your life in battle! You need to open strong, finishing your enemy as soon as you can! Nocturna Nigredinis!"

Ai could have sworn she felt the air humming and growing thicker and heavier, almost unbreathable, as very quickly, a giant mass of deep shadows took form above and around Takane, coming together to create the fearsome figure of a gigantic humanoid wrapped in black, a hood obscuring a face masked in ghostly stark white. The 3-F student felt literal horror then, seeing that being with impossibly long arms and twisting thin tendrils coming out of everywhere coming into existence around the blode, shielding her with its oversized hands.

"M-My God! I have seen things like that in Harumi-chan's manga!" she gasped.

"I've seen better," Chamo indifferently puffed his cigarette.

"Always a believer on starting strong, no, Takane-kun?" asked Itoshiki.

"Ho ho! Whoever starts strong, finishes strong!" Goodman extended a hand ahead, and as if following her cue, the creature shot its tendrils towards Negi, forcing him to jump back quickly, almost stumbling.

As soon as he had barely regained footing, Takane jumped after him, the shadow golem mimicking her motions, throwing a punch along with her. Negi avoided that one right in time, but then the girl swung her other fist, and so did the being, hitting Negi in the stomach and sending him a few feet back, making him gasp aloud for air and to hold his lunch down. Erebus frowned thoughtfully, being strongly reminded of a similar scene in his own life...

Itoshiki rubbed the bridge of his nose with two fingers. "Too powerful a technique to use against a beginner, but Takane-kun rarely minces efforts when she believes she should punish someone or show her own value. She is scarily like Kitsu-san in that regard..."

Yes, basically, I'm adapting the Negi/Takane tournament fight here, with a few logical twists, since the order for the tournament will be altered anyway. Of course, this is a much less experienced Negi, so it'll be a lot more difficult for him than it was in canon...

In regard to this, do you guys think that the chapter could end with the guy busting into the bath? The next scene is a flashback to his arrival, and it could either go here or at the beginning of the next chapter. I think it might go better in this chapter, as the flashback ends at the same point this scene does, but it could really go either way.

@JT: I’m with No Limit. I judge based on how much it affects me. I don’t care HOW it affects me, as long as it does. Whether it makes me laugh, cry or throw a fist into the air, it’s all good. However, it’s easier to notice when a work makes you sad than when it makes you happy. That’s why True Art Is Angsty exists. I must admit that I sometimes feel like that, because ready dark stuff makes me feel better afterwards. Kind of like, “Wow, those characters had all that happen to them! Now I can feel better about my own life, because I don’t have to deal with that. I’m so thankful.” As for your new idea, sounds fascinating! Start with Setsuna, with her self-confidence issues, I’m sure that something written by her would be fascinating (plus I’m biased). We can have something more perky for the next one. I agree with no Limit about Makie’s and Ayaka’s would probably a little wish-fulfillment-y. Ah, you’re doing something different for Makie? Okay, we’ll have to wait and see. “Oh, right, I forgot to introduce here!” should be “introduce her!” Also, yeah. Good place for a cliffhanger.

@Napoleon: “that kind of relationships yet..” should be: “that kind of relationship yet” or ”those kinds of relationships yet” either works. “you are eady for it” should be “ready”.

I’ve written a bit more, including for EHK’s request, but you’ll have to wait a bit to see it due to complications IRL.

[up]Well, yes. Just saying that I identify with the appeal. There was a while where I really liked stuff to be dark. Especially during 2003 and 2008 where I was a lot more morbid. My self insert for the civil war was basically me during one of those years. Appropriate in hindsight as 2003 is when Negima occurs.

EDIT: Also, seriously, why can I edit some pages but I can't edit the Negima Thread Ideas page? It's really annoying as trying kicks me out and I have to open Tv Tropes all over again!

I don't like angst for the sake of angst. Real life is full of fail, and I don't need any more reminders of it—all the time, anyway. I don't mind going to angst on occasion, but I tend to swing towards comedy.

Of course, that's not to say that I don't want comedy blended in with like, horror or despair. There's a certain style of humor that also allows for drama and pathos to occur as well.

You know you want to add more tropes to THIS.

Unequally, Continuation.

Chamo gasped time and time again while the shadow golem walloped Negi across the battlefield.

"Oh, no!" he shrilled. "Stop this brutality! This Nee-chan plays dirty! She's going to break my Bro! Don't dare shatter his family jewels, cruel but sexy harpy! Hmmm, then again, such a powerful Sis would make a great Pactio partner..."

Ai gave him a brief dubious look. "Sorry for even asking, but d-do you ever think of anything but people kissing each other...?"

"No, but I'll tell you about the rest when you're 18."

Ai accidentally moved her shoulder so Chamo fell to the ground.

Accidentally. Really!

"S-So-Sorry, Chamo-san!"

"It's okay, Ai-Nee, I didn't even— AGGHH!"

"Oh my! And now my foot accidentally slammed itself on you! Sorry, so sorry, please forgive me!"

Meanwhile, Negi had resorted to blocking with his staff as the hits kept coming his way, gaining a better defense as he began to read the patterns on Takane's motions. The golem did everything she did first, so it actually paid better not to be distracted by the awe inspiring dark giant and keep his eyes on her instead. Not like doing that was unplesant either way, for some vague reason he couldn't put his finger on...

The back of his neck itched again.

Erebus hummed with some concern. At the point he had first fought the Takane he knew himself, he already had learned martial arts from Ku Fei, and he had a very hard time dealing with her at first. Surely, his other self, who didn't have the luxury of such a previous training, would be much harder pressed for a victory chance. He was in the strict defensive now; all his long range spells were easily countered by the shadow extensions, and he lacked the honed speed needed to get in range and strike directly. Not that it would help him either; the Shadow Armor would just cancel any hit he could connect. Unless he could figure out the same thing he did before she brought him down, she had won the match.

"Ho ho ho! The Apostle of Justice demands a punishment on those who break our rules! You're just as careless in the battle field as you were with your secret, Sensei! Maybe you should just head back home and settle with fortune telling!" the blonde taunted, launching a rapid parry of punches Negi had to stop with a few well placed Deflexios.

Negi clenched his teeth, his sore spot touched. "I'll never...!" He launched himself ahead, jumping over one tendril reaching for him and striking with his staff, "... stop fighting for—!!" Then he had the air blown out of him as a gigantic fist punched him in the stomach, sending him flying back.

"Fighting for what, little boy?" Takane snorted, pausing for only a moment, her breath puffing. The effort seemed to be finally getting to her as well now. Why wouldn't that annoying pup just stay down?

"Not for what... For who!" Negi wheezed, working back to his feet, his annoyance bubbling now. "As long as I know that person waits for me at the end of the road, I'll never stray from it!"

Takane smiled. "Ah. I see. Your father, naturally. Who else could it be?"

Negi shot a grim determined stare at her.

Goodman shifted around, focusing her power as the shadow golem seemed to grow around her. "Show me you're really that fabled man's son. Show me you really can go the distance, and I'll help you achieve that dream like Sensei wants me to. But somehow, I don't think you're deserving that much."

"If I'm not yet, I'll be," he promised, almost with a growl, and charged ahead again.

He had just had an idea.

[up]Not quite sure how to do a 4-koma in written format. And no way I'm drawing one, seeing as my drawing sucks.

I actually did want to have more "Haruna tries to hide RD" shenanigans*

, but I wanted to keep the plot moving. I'm actually considering having a separate series of side chapters for that purpose. There's so much humor potential in the character interactions; so much that I can't fit it all in without making the Myth Arc (yes, there is one) drag horribly. So I was thinking of having another sort of story going along side the main one to put all the slice of life stuff in so it wouldn't impede the main plot. The only problem being that it would basically be a fifth ongoing thing to write, in addition to several other shorter things I want to get started on soon. Arrrgh so much writing and so little time...
