I'm looking forward to this one, actually. I mostly know Outkast from radio stuff, though I have heard The Love Below.
Video Game Census. Please contribute. So am I. I've liked everything I've heard from Outkast thusfar.
Words cast into the uncaring void of the internet.A couple things about the album:
- The limited edition version featured the Mandelbrot set
◊, and this in itself makes the album awesome.
- Although it is a hip-hop album through and through, it combines quite a wide range of genres, from 70's psych-funk, to gospel, and even heavy metal and drum and bass.
- Lyrically, it's spread just as wide, covering a lot of emotions/moods and themes, tied together by lots and lots of comedic interludes, or "skits". They're anything but Album Filler, though, all of them segue into the song after them rather cleverly.
- Fair warning: Andrè and Big Boi are rather... Southern in their rapping styles and lyrics. What I mean is, expect some of the typical hip-hop trappings, although they only take up a small part of the album.
But don't let me raise your expectations too much. Just listen and enjoy.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!Dude, they're black, it's totally okay!
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!"I'll Call Before I Come" is totally not a Double Entendre at all. In any way. Nope.
And "Kim and Cookie" is hilarious, you're crazy
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!Ooookay, finished. Here's my thoughts.
Outkast are apparently not, as I've said a bajillion times now, my thing. However, this album is definitely a cut above most hip-hop. The varied influences from various genres kept it from getting boring. On the downside, I don't like the profuse swearing in the lyrics, and didn't particularly care for the lyrical content even aside from that.
I won't be adding this to my collection, but I did enjoy listening to it.
Just started listening, the first track was bizarre (and funny), like all rap album intermissions are. I'm loving So Fresh, So Clean right now, and the lyrics are really quite awesome and HOLYCRAP MS JACKSON CAME ON AS I WAS TYPING HELL YEAH I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
Btw, did you know the piano playing throughout the song is a version of Wagner's Treulich Geführt, aka the Wedding music? Cause it is.
I miss the doggys and owl.
Forever. Forever ever. Forever ever? Best part of any song ever! (Ever ever?)

Not many people realize, 50 Cent is half man, half cossack. - Ross NobleI'm gonna focus on listening to the songs tunes the first time around, and then sit down and actually listen to whats being said the second time, cause man rap makes it hard to understand them.
But jesus man, how am I meant to hear the lyrics in B.O.B? Things a freakin' cheetah on speed.
I love the funk/soul style of the backing instruments/samples.
I don't like Stanklove, but I think thats the first song I can actually say that about, which is pretty good.

Not many people realize, 50 Cent is half man, half cossack. - Ross NobleI'm probably gonna have to listen to this album in stages, just because of its length.
Right now, on "Gasoline Dreams". Liking it.
Holy shit "Humble Mumble" is an awesome song.

"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."Just finished my first listen-through of the album. I had heard "BOB" and "Ms. Jackson" before, and I really liked them, so I was excited to hear the rest.
It's awesome. Wicked was totally right, it spans so many different moods...it's kind of ridiculous how it manages to go from something like "I'll Call Before I Come" to something like "Toilet Tisha" while staying really cohesive. I generally hate skits on rap albums, but these are surprisingly funny, though some seem a bit pointless. The "BITCH, STAY OFF THAT BLOW!" at the end of "I'm Cool" made me laugh out loud.
What I like most about this album at the moment is that it manages to evoke so many different moods, and stay true to this spirit of place whether it's Stankonia or the South, if that makes any sense. Like, the music all seems like it came from the same place, but some is aggressive revolution type music, some is more poignant, and some is just lighthearted party music.
The actual rapping on this album is crazy...Andre 3000 and Big Boi have such an awesome dynamic, and without one to temper the other this album could easily have gotten either too weird or too conventional.
"BOB" remains my favorite song on the album, I think. I don't know what Power music electric revival is, but I can't stop listening to the song.
Overall, definitely a keeper.
edit: By the way, this club is so much fun. This thread has started to be the first thing I check when I come home from school. Big ups to Saeglopur for starting it and the people who keep it going.
