They make up the majority of your acquaintnces and friends and they're much less prone to drama than romantic and physical ones. Sometimes its nice to be able to talk to someone without rolling tobacco, unless you're actually rolling tobacco. Although I don't know why you would want to do that in particular.

I thought I had a great one throughout high school. Then she disclosed three years in that her feelings had changed. It wasn't until we broke up after just over a year of dating (and by the way, nothing that could even be remotely construed as sex) that it became clear that she truly loved me and wanted to spend the rest of her life with me, and I just would have been happy with that same close platonic friendship.

I've got some close female friends here in college now, but nothing like the way things were in those first two years of high school...

I always hated the idea that two people couldn't be close without being in a romantic relationship.

I bet Plato had a lot of these.

Exactly. It's even worse when you have a friend of the opposite gender that you're really close to that everyone assumes you're screwing. I mean, so what if I have a friend and we hug each other all the time and share secrets and have elaborate in-jokes no one else gets and I occasionally wear his clothing and use his stomach as a pillow? That doesn't mean that anything's going on between us! Wait a minute...

It's not like it sounds, I swear...

Frankly, I blame children's cartoons. Too many major girl characters just end up as love interests.

@Yarrunmace: I blame media with romance in general, because quite a few females end up as simply love interests.
