If I told you the premise for the first series was "general RPG plot" would you get my point?

I think 01 really hit its stride when they left, came back, and found out that those four Megas had torn apart the Digital world while they were away.

It doesn't seem like a typical RPG setup.

Find monster companion, have adventures where they gradually increase the amount of power they have while defeating more and more powerful forces of evil until they save the world.

Oh, that.

I was thinking along the lines of, start out a small-fry hero, pick up friends, and eventually save the world.

Digimon's cartoon used far more Stock Footage, I think. Once everybody could get their Digimon up to at least Champion form, the Transformation Sequence and attacks on a speeding-lines background would take up a good few minutes of screen time.

When Pokemon had Pikachu shoot the same lightning bolt as always, at least the artists remembered to change the background sometimes.

My RPG experience: Super Mario RPG first, then Pokémon, then Chrono Trigger and then Final Fantasy four through six. And more after that.

Yeah, the early FF games were probably actually the closest JRP Gs to being WRP Gs, since they were the closest to their roots of being interactive-but-simplified D&D games.

How could Digimon be complicated. The later series, maybe. But the first season is just some kids getting sucked into a new world that they have to save.

Railroaded DND, but that's just a part of the format.

Reminds me of how Wired magazine had an article about Steve Job's resignation, published about a day or two before he died.

It's actually been not one but TWO new strips since clefairy pointed out the Team Rocket grunt.

And they're actually kinda funny, too. I generally like the humor of this comic, to be honest.

I totally forgot about this thread. Thanks, Major Tom!
