They don't really stunt stat growth though, do they? I'm pretty sure that all they do is get you lower stats because each rare candied level is one less level gained by fighting, and consequently, earning E Vs.
I have a message from another time...I have read that you can get back E Vs later, without leveling up, but I don't remember how. I think it has to do with using a stat-up item.
I thought the Pokédrugs vitamins only added a hunk of E Vs to the given stat?
Either way, as of Gen V, E Vs now change your stats as you get them, and you can alter them even at level 100, so there's really no reason not to use Rare Candies anymore.
Unless you think that you'll run into a much HARDER level to attain somewhere down the road...
Long story short, you gain these hidden points every time you beat another 'mon. Which stats these are associated with depends on the 'mon defeated. When you level, if you have enough of those points in a certain stat, the associated stat increases by more. Rare candies bypass battling, which means you get no E Vs for that level, and therefore lower stats.
It's not a big problem unless you reach Level 100 and haven't maxed out your E Vs yet.
So, in Blue, the best solution is to multiply the pokédrugs vitamins as well.

I have a message from another time...Oh? And how is knowing about them not fun? I happen to like training Pokemon - it's the only way to keep the game interesting besides restarting and doing everything over again (which, admittedly, is very fun as well, but not so advisable when you've got other people you can play with)

Everyone has their own definition of 'fun'.
Personally, I prefer never have to bother with silly Ev points and compatible personalities. However, Pokemon is generally nice enough to allow a casual gamer to finish the game without optimizing training, so I don't care if this silly stuff are in the game or not.

I'm not obsessed with training up E Vs, nor do I have the time to. But I do know about them, and I figured a bare-bones explanation was in order, 'cause of the discussion of Rare Candies.
Well, OK, I sometimes try to generally fight things that look like they'd have useful E Vs, but I don't have like a big list of what to fight.
Is that sufficient fun for ya?
I have a message from another time...There was a guy running for some student government position one year when I was in college. His campaign poster was a picture of a pokeball with the legend:
Alex ______ caught them all.
Twice.
Vote Alex _______ for (whatever the position was).
If I'd bothered to vote, it probably woulda have been for him :P
And I've never managed to catch 'em all. Closest I came was 220 in Silver. I even had a Celebi... then the battery died.

It's not over. Not yet.I gave up on catching them all once the concept of "version exclusivity" sunk in twelve years ago. Grumblegrumble fleecing my money grumblegrubmble. I usually just try to get the ones like and after that try out as many as I can - Soul Silver has a nice wide berth of options, and not too many Pokemon are restricted, thankfully.
But I'm so glad Fire Red had both of my favorite game-specific mons, though: Primeape and Persian.

Anyone know of hacks that let you actually catch them all?
Also, I always noted that Pokémon Red had a problem with money.
The Elite Four are the only trainers you can re-defeat for money, and actually the only way to get extra money after clearing all dungeons of items and beating all other trainers. So if you get stuck before you meet them...well, in Blue and Yellow you can catch a Meowth and have it spam Pay Day. But not in Red.
I noticed that when my brother was playing Blue, and he never used Pay Day because it only brought $25 or so.
Of course, the Elite Four (plus The Rival) are not that hard to beat without spending items (and thus money), but it's still quite challenging.

Yeah, the missingo glitch was awesome for generating rare candies. I feel pretty bad about that now.
