[up]That and the rise of streaming making theaters akin to arcades, once the only way to experience a film, then getting by on superior tech, now seen by many as a relic for special situations.

Just watched Ip Man 1 and 2.

Man, that Mr. Twister doesn't seem to understand he's in a Kung-Fu movie. He was actually winning there for a bit.

He killed Sammo Hung!

.....It was like Kung Fu Rocky IV!

.....seriously.

The trailer for Netflix's Enola Holmes featuring Eleven as the titular Enola and Superman as Sherlock Holmes himself is up on Twitter now.

EDIT: My brain was stumped about what "alone loshme reeebtpms wnettyrhitd" means, but I've deduced that it reads "Enola Holmes September Twenty-Third". In other words, Enola Holmes is coming September 23.

Bump.

The Russo Brothers' Cherry, starring Tom Holland as a former army medic who gets roped into crime to pay for the drugs that make his PTSD go away, is now an Apple TV+ exclusive.

So, Greenland with Gerard Butler. I understand that the movie industry hopes that a spectacular blockbuster with an A-lister actor will bring people back in the theaters and recover them from the slump caused by the pandemic... but still, a disaster movie?

Kinda hilarious that the audiences would get relief from the world going to shit by watching a movie where the world goes to shit. Or maybe that's what the people want right now? Do they enjoy knowing that reality is more fucked-up than disaster movies now?

Also I heard that there's a lot of family drama in it and that it's pretty slow, so it won't be too good for those who only want to see scenes of chaos and mayhem either. It will probably be crap like Geostorm, but at least that one was tailor made for conspiracy theorists.

"Effective Altruism" is just another bunch of horsesh*t.

Thomas the Tank Engine is getting another film adaptation, helmed by director Marc Forster (World War Z, Christopher Robin, Quantum of Solace).

“’Thomas’ is a beloved global franchise that focuses on the importance of friendship, a theme that resonates deeply with children and parents around the world,” said Mattel Films chief Robbie Brenner. “Marc is an incredible storyteller and I look forward to partnering with him to tell Thomas’ story in a modern and unexpected way.”

The companies, which announced the project Tuesday, said “Thomas & Friends” will be a four-quadrant family adventure that blends live-action and animation. Mattel Films will co-produce the film alongside Forster and Renée Wolfe, co-founder and co-CEO of 2Dux.

“Thomas & Friends” joins other Mattel Films projects in development including films based on American Girl, Barbie, Barney, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, View Master and Wishbone. However, Mattel has lagged behind rivals Lego and Hasbro in terms of moviemaking in Hollywood.

Mattel’s most recent foray into movies came with 2016’s live-action “Max Steel,” which performed poorly with less than $4 million at the domestic box office.

[up] Wow, "Masters of the Universe" can't get worse than the original movie, now can it.

Also, Hannah John-Kamen (she of Killjoys infamy) joined the Resident Evil reboot as Jill Valentine. It's not "Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman" casting choice, but I hope it'll be a "Zazie Beetz as Domino" casting choice for me.

Why are studios so stubborn in making their film purchaseable digitally?

[up] Because discs are too pricey for the digital age? (Really not sure.)

Anyway...

Who wanted to see Logan but with Santa Claus?

Laconic synopsis: Santa's become convinced that Christmas and he himself are seen as just a farce, so he goes into hiding in Alaska as Chris Cringle. However, he's forced to fend for himself when an assassin comes for Santa's head. And the assassin's client? A 12-year-old with apparently way too much money who got a lump of coal one Christmas ago. Yup.

[up]I'm talking about debuting via streaming. WB is too stubborn while Disney went full greedy. Why they didn't they apply the Trolls' method?

[up] They probably thought it was a fluke and thought they could do better.

Speaking of greed and stubbornness, David Fincher's new movie Mank is a retro-styled biopic of a ruthlessly critical, booze-guzzling screenwriter named Herman J. Mankiewicz and his race to finish the screenplay for a little indie movie called Citizen Kane before he's beaten to the punch by a little-known gentleman named Orson Welles.

Hey, so remember how Daniel Kaluuya is doing a movie on Barney the Dinosaur?

He managed to talk a little about that one...

EW: Something that must have spoken to you is a live-action Barney movie, which you are set to produce with Mattel. I have so many questions, but I'll settle for why you wanted to bring this to life.

Kaluuya: Barney taught us, 'I love you, you love me. Won't you say you love me too?' That's one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when that isn't true? I thought that was really heartbreaking. I have no idea why but it feels like that makes sense. It feels like there's something unexpected that can be poignant but optimistic. Especially at this time now, I think that's really, really needed.

Folks on Twitter are joking that this means Barney will be a horror story or something, but what if this winds up doing what The LEGO Movie did with its aesops and becomes a metamodernistic tale on why we seriously need love right now?

So I just found this:

The Hong Kong version of the famous ladder fight from Jackie Chans First Strike.

I had just watched the International version of the same scene on youtube, so caught a few bits that this version had that the one I'm used to didn't.

And of course, there's a different soundtrack. Certain a strange experience.

When you say international version, do you mean English dubs, or something else?

[up] I always thought English dubs don't work nearly as well in live-action as it does in animation. (Though I guess that's the general consensus of literally everyone?)

There is the whole thing with live-action about this actor having that unlikely accent. And the question of budget for producing high quality dubs. In fact the French dubs for an American blockbuster are generally good.

In cases like First Strike, if the dubbing production had to remake all the sound effects, it probably means that no soundtrack without the original speech was available to them.

In a strange turn of events, MGM just bought the film rights to an upcoming book proposal called The Antiscoial Network by Ben Mezrich, according to Deadline. The working story chronicles the (current) events between Wall Street hedge funds and r/wallstreetbets regarding Gamestop's stock, where the former were hoping to gain profits from Gamestop's financial failure.

The project brings MGM’s Michael De Luca back together with Mezrich, author of The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, a Tale Of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal, which was adapted into the Academy Award-winning The Social Network that De Luca produced.

This latest story seems right up Mezrich’s alley and started when a group of rag-tag investors from the Reddit page called Wall Street Bets banded together to put the squeeze on at least two hedge funds that had bet that Gamestop shares would fall. the hedge funds had been shorting Game Stop’s shares, betting that its stock was doomed to further decline, these amateur investors led by the Reddit page began pushing the other way, buying shares and stock options. That caused Game Stop’s market value to increase rise over 1,700% since December. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the market value rose over $10 billion.

The fun didn’t stop there as more newcomers to the stock game began looking at other stocks deemed obsolete or super low like Nokia and AMC to try and do the same resulting a major controversy when the trading app Robin Hood began putting restrictions on certain stocks.

Its unknown where Mezrich’s story starts and stops but its certainly a story as timely as you can get and clearly something Hollywood was happy to sink its teeth in so soon.
