Pretty well established that the dog is a good dog, but how does that make it a Heroic Dog? And what does Hugo Chavez threatening to cut off oil to the US have to do with any of this?

This is still a signature.

1 is amusing, but neither of them really scream "hero". What we need is a picture of Lassie. Lassie's gotta be well-known enough, non?

This is still a signature.

Definitely Krypto. Hadn't even thought of him,

That Krypto is kind of goofy looking. How about Rex The Wonderdog?

Just one question — How did he get the bridle on the horse?

It's an inherently goofy trope, and the picture should reflect that. Perhaps Ace the Bathound?

Rex, who of course is never goofy-looking! ;)

But here's another Krypto.

I like the second Krypto.

I'd really prefer to see the dog doing something at least moderately heroic, rather than simply posing.

Seeing as how Superman is considered one of the most recognizable characters of all time, some of that brushes onto Krypto, meaning you only have to look at him to see "heroic".

[up][up] Yeah, that's a fair point. There is indeed a fair amount of "heroic trait inheritance" from Superman, but...

May I suggest another Rex cover? Hard to get much more heroic than rescuing a basket full of kitties from a fire!

[up][up] That is a good point: even if I have no idea who Krypto is, he has that Superman shield symbol thingie on his collar, instant hero. Also understand wanting the picture to be of a dog doing something heroic.

[up][up] Krypto can match that easy.

[up][up][up] It looks nice to me, especially since krypto looks like he might have lost a few kittens.

I like Krypto w/kittens. Wait, are we sure we want to use a dog with super powers?

^That's another fair point. This trope isn't "Superpowered dogs."

True, but superpowered dogs aren't disqualified.

Hmmm. Looks like Rex could be a goldmine of possibilities:

defending a boy from a jaguar,

Rex lowering ''a kid'' from a burning building

Rex throwing a railroad switch to save the same kid he had to defend from the jaguar...

Doesn't he though? Hey, is that a trope? The stupid kid the heroic animal has to save every week?

Timmy in a Well is probably the closest thing, but it's about the animal doing the saving.

I'm going to say it's Just Eat Gilligan. tongue

I like the one Deboss just linked—the trope says it's usually relatively realistic, so I like showing a real life example.
