The description is fairly long, but I don't see an actual definition of the trope.

It's awesome that the disclaimer about the title not being related to Star Wars is longer than the rest of the description. That shouldn't have survived YKTTW.

It's a stock phrase. All you have to do to qualify is say "Welcome to the Dark Side, we have cookies," and you have fulfilled this trope. That's all that stock phrases are. Someone says X.

What shimaspawn said, for the Stock Phrase aspect of the trope. For the other aspect, I added the following laconic to give it an easier overview: Those "dark and edgy" people wasn't so scary after all.

As for the Star Wars disclaimer, because the Star Wars connection is hardcoded into some people's minds as well into the trope called "The Dark Side". Maybe I should trim it a bit, however.

Using a Stock Phrase isn't a trope beyond Stock Phrase. They most likely end up as trope names because the situation they are said in is a trope not because it's its own trope.

This is a problem with Stock Phrases. People propose them without actually considering whether they're a trope in the context they get used.

There's also the problem that the page doesn't appear to list any examples of this allegedly-stock phrase actually being used in a work of fiction.

Cutlisting this right now.

280.000 hits on Google not notable enough? ;-)

In any case, the stock phrase aspect of the trope was never intended to be it's primary aspect. The aesop aspect is more important, and it's primarily intended to be about mood.

Could this trope have used more time on YKTTW? Surely. As it is now, well: Refining it where it is or bumping it back to YKTTW, that's now up to the Cut Masters. :-)

However, the YKTTW discussion didn't provide much input last round, it mostly derailed into the issue on whether or not Star Wars have a monopoly on the concept "Dark Side" or not. This thread have been considerably more helpful. Then again, if we do start over on YKTTW, maybe a fresh start will help. :-)

There are sixteen million hits for "bananas", but that doesn't mean we need a page on them.

Because it's a legitimate trope, not because it's a phrase people say sometimes in Real Life.

Also... "In any case, the stock phrase aspect of the trope was never intended to be it's primary aspect. The aesop aspect is more important, and it's primarily intended to be about mood."

...then it should have a different title and description, as suggested in its YKTTW, because they both imply that it's about the phrase (which is totally based on the Star Wars universe, btw; even if people use it differently now e.g. lower-case dark side, that is misleading; it is evocative of evil/The Dark Side because it is supposed to be, Dark Is Not Evil and The Dark Side are mutually exclusive because The Dark Side is, in fact, evil).

IMO cut and maybe relaunch from a new YKTTW if there is something worthwhile (distinct from Scary Musician, Harmless Music and Dark Is Not Evil) buried in there.

The banana thing was a joke...

Anyway I think the title would fit a "Darker and Edgier isn't so bad" trope I can think of a few series and characters that would fit Negi from Negima the most glaring example he even says the "isn't so bad" part.

On reflection, isn't this "trope" just "A character discovers that Dark Is Not Evil"?
