Ghost Story actually looks like it's gonna be much more light-hearted and small in scale.

First Ghost Story sample chapter is out! Gitcher WMG engines charged back to full gear again, gang, 'cause shit's getting undead!

SPACE? LASERS? ROBOTS?Butcher, you tease
Anyway, first impressions: I'm intrigued by this "they" that apparently played a bit loose on the rules. Can it be Eldritch Abomination tiem nao? Also, I'm hoping this means we'll get to see Mortimer Lindquist again, it seems like right up his alley.
Liveblog | DeadblogButcher is riffing off JK Rowling, I bet. When Harry (Potter) dies temporarily in Book 7, he understands his surroundings as being similar to King's Cross station in London. Having the book start with Dresden nearly being run over by a train seems like a play on that.
Neat to have a sense of what's coming in this next book. I'm glad Butcher put that out for us to see.
Iiiiiiinteresting.
We already knew that there were sentient undead in the Dresdenverse, what with the Black Court and all, but wouldn't this be the first time we've had an honest-to-goodness ghost-type undead, at least in the classical sense of the spirit of somebody who'd passed on, rather than just a sort of psychic 'echo'?
Also, is it just me, or is the cosmology of the Dresdenverse a bit wonky? I mean, you've got angels, demons, big-G God, small-g pantheon gods and their various attendants, the Fair Folk, Eldricht Abominations, undead, dragons... it's going to take some juggling to get them all to make sense inhabiting the same 'verse- most Fantasy Kitchen Sink 'verses don't tend to have this much of the... upper tier, I guess..? of the cosmology :/
And Harry showing up and meddling despite being dead is going to be amusing- there are going to be a lot of people that aren't quite sure what to think of that...
I seriously have to wait another 5 months to read more? AAAARRRRRGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!
I believe the trope you are looking for is All Myths Are True, with a bit of it's related one: Clap Your Hands If You Believe.
Indeed. I don't remember it ever being outright stated, but I always got the sense that gods in the Dresdenverse work on belief-power. The more people believe in and/or pray to a given god, the more powerful it is. Thus, the Abrahamic God is the most powerful, because he's being fed power by all the Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the world. Meanwhile, Gods like Odin have settled down and gone into private security, because no one really believes in them anymore.
EDIT: Oh hey, we've got a trope that sums this up perfectly: Gods Need Prayer Badly. Cool.

SPACE? LASERS? ROBOTS?Y'know, that reminds me... I remember one of the Fae in the Dresdenverse referring to Yahweh as 'the White God', which always bugged me slightly, and now I know why. That's a title given to Heimdall, of the Norse pantheon. Uhm... what?
Also, Dresden cosmic beings don't get depowered when no-one believes in them, exactly... more that their plane of existence moves away from Earth somewhat, limiting how much influence they have there. And it doesn't seem to be belief, exactly... people just have to be aware of them- nobody really believes in Fairies, at least among the muggles, but they can still screw with people quite nicely, and are in no danger of going away courtesy of... well, Fairy Tales (the Brothers Grimm and... uhm, one of the others that starts with 'G' are credited for a lot of that).
For that matter, the Judeo-Christian God seems to work on a slightly different level than most of the other major players, at least from the impression I got. Dunno, though- it's never really been explored in-depth.
Except for silly old me, for whom the thought never even crossed his mind :(
I am kinds a confused, we still have like a dozen books to go in the series, how will Butcher continue it, following the storyline followed in the teaser? I hope it doesn't get stale.
Herald of the Literature Sub-Forum. Share me your favourite book/series/author!Well, it might seem like that the series is at a natural stopping point, after Ghost Story, but that'd give... closure and peace to our hero and... well, Butcher ain't having none of that
Seriously, though, to me it's pretty obvious there'll be some semblance of a twist, the question is more what sort of a twist it'll be. A bit like watching a M. Night Shyamalan movie, except with less inevitable disappointment.
Graaaaaaah can't read sample chapter from work due to filter. Haaaaate.
http://lockescans.blogspot.com - My Air Master scanlation projectWell there was that bit back in Dead Beat where Harry met up with his dad and chatted for a few minutes.
I'm trying to work out exactly how much time has elapsed in-universe since the start of the series. Every new story seems to take place about a year after the one that preceded it, although I'm pretty sure that Harry says in Small Favour that he met the Archive five years earlier, which I think was in Death Masks. Or maybe it was Blood Rites. I can't remember.
In any case, I think that the series has covered about ten years or so in the story. How old were the characters in the first book?
^^Go here
and check the forum, Pricille made a hell of a timeline.
currently have a paperback version of Storm Front in my hands, just got in in from another library.
Untitled Power Rangers Story

I'm honestly more worried about Ghost Story in that regard
