To the guy who hates rap: check out Atmosphere, Mac Lethal, Sweatshop Union (if you can find them) and Swollen Members. They dump the ghetto-fabulous posturing for street poetry. Much more palatable.
If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~Vocal Minority, perhaps?
Thanks for the suggestions!

Public Enemy ain't exactly a newbie-friendly act, you know.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!Underrated: The State Lottery. Very obscure folk-punk/indie band. Just released their first proper album, When the Night Comes. Very recommended for fans of The Hold Steady or Titus Andronicus.
Overrated: Jeff Buckley and Pearl Jam.
They're off the streets now, and back on the road on the riot trail. http://www.last.fm/user/sca_punk^ Must...not...comment...
SO ANYWAY
Underrated: A Forest Of Stars, Krallice, Ben Frost.
http://www.last.fm/user/BlueGhost60Overrated: Pendulum (I still like them, just consider them over-rated),
Yngwie Malmsteen,
Mozart (naff off he is).
Underrated: Grieg,
Mussorgsky,
Stravinsky (already mentioned but yeah, and yes I do like folk-influenced classical music why do you ask?),
Jurassic 5,
Korn.
I feel Korn especially are underrated for two main reasons - being Lighter and Softer than many metal bands, and being Nu Metal. C'maan. They're better than they tend to get credit for...

^^ J5.. that's interesting, round here I'd say they've always been overrated by those who know them. Wider population though, certainly.
A lot of UK bands from 1999-2000 remain underrated. * There was a big influx of them (along with everything else around the millennium) which didn't help, and a lot of them subsequently called it a day before the myspace/self-released-and-promoted thing really kicked in. Muse, Doves, Elbow, Idlewild, Snow Patrol, and Biffy Clyro were the ones who made it- and incidentally most of those are now overrated. Such is life.

...is out to lunch.@airportleirin:
I humbly agree. I've never seen them brought up in a music discussion either. And, for that matter, Tears for Fears is also too underrated, even though they've got a fair share of hits as well. I know of no one who has ever listened to The Hurting. They've all listened to Songs from the Big Chair, etc.
And, another (unrelated) artist that is quite underrated: Digable Planets.

Most of it is indeed Flanderization; the vile, misogynist stuff is by and large constrained to a single subgenre (which also happens to be the one with the most exposure), and the "vile" part of it is simply due to Values Dissonance with upper-class peoples.
