This may help. Skip to itunes_artist_album_listing. It has a similar function to what you're looking for, but for albums. I'm not exactly sure the list would include the artists' names.

Regardless, my collection includes a bunch of filetypes itunes doesn't play. I use foobar.

i just use windows media, i have a plugin that lets it play .ogg, and .ogg and .mp3 are all i have really.
