Double meanings, Double Entredes, Incredibly Lame Puns, everything! Language is meant to be examined, to be played with, and utilized to enforce ideas.

  • Watchmen had wonderful ones: for example, the events that lead Jon (a former watchmaker, or watchman) to become Doctor Manhattan were set off by a fat man stepping on a watch or nuclear power "stepping on" the usefulness of old technology
    • "What immortal hand or eye/ could frame thy fearful symmetrry?" In this case, does it mean "framed" like a picture, or "framed" like set up for a crime?
  • The entirety of The Phantom Tollbooth. "I'm from a land very far away called Context. But it's such a nasty place I try to spend all my time out of it."
  • Here's one of mine. In one of the chapters of a story I'm writing, a new Collector is getting on the job training, and one of her "seniors" tells her of several legends around the world of a ghost called the "Grey Lady", a ghost that supposedly appears to people before they die. The chapter is called "The Grey Lady" and takes place in the building for the New York Times. Did you know that's a common nickname for the Times?

What are some of your favorite examples? Be it from your favorite media or some of your own creation, let's Collect some!

Wordplay? Is that like where you go to literary conventions dressed as "defenestration" or "qat"?

I tend to engage in a lot of witty banter with my Master. I love our wordplay almost as much as our painplay. It makes me feel like we're Kate and Petruchio.

"All pain is a punishment, and every punishment is inflicted for love as much as for justice." — Joseph De Maistre.

It took me forever to get The Phantom Tollbooth pun when I first read it.

...

Some of my favorites from various sources, mostly anonymous:

  • A pun is the shortest distance between two straight lines.
  • Murder most fowl! Not all of them. Just most.
  • NONE SHALL PASS! Do you look like a nun? I don't think so!

ERROR: The current state of the world is unacceptable. Save anyway? YES/NO

La, la, la la, la.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.

[up]That song immediately popped into my head when I saw this topic.

I need to rerad The Phantom Tollbooth. I liked it when my 6th grade class read it, but that was eight years ago and I understand a lot more now than I did then.

Anyway, puns. Yeah, they're pretty cool. I typically only use them in jokes I'm already exaggerating and not actually trying to be funny.

My PM box is always open to anyone who wants to talk/vent.

Speaking of such, does anyone here know any way of improving the expression "Diamond is not Crash" so that it still sounds as cool but also sounds like good English and not Engrish?
