As with game music, game art is shaped by its technical limits, and therein lies the beauty. NES artists had to milk every color and sprite dry.

Here's a start. Castlevania III, with a style best described as NES gothic, lets its colors drip down the screen for an effect both gritty and lush.

For some reason I first thought of Kirby's Adventure, which has a lot of different scenery for a NES game. Frequent slowdown notwithstanding.

Kirby games always look so cheery. The bright colors help.

I think Dune II had a good aesthetic. Too bad in the remake they drew from David Lynch:
