okay maybe I will use Valeria, but at the some time not entirely, but have her remote operating a robot that she's passing off as herself from the future, with a bunch of Nanobots allowing it to simulate Technopath abilities.

Currently reading Avengers Forever. I'm kinda mixed on it.

I like how Kurt Busiek writes The Avengers, in general. And Carlos Pacheco is a fantastic artist. I'm also enjoying how prominent The Wasp and Hank Pym are (since I really like the characters, and this is the first Avengers book I've bought that doesn't have them leaving the team). The action is great, the plot's intriguing, and the humor works whenever it's present.

On the other hand, this is pretty much the definition of Continuity Porn. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the Marvel Universe, but once I reached the halfway point, I got completely lost because of how the story practically stops in order to have characters explain and retcon decades of continuity. I also kinda miss Iron Man and Thor. But Hawkeye's there. So is Cap...mostly.

I guess I like it, but the Continuity Porn is really slowing it down.

Ah, yeah, Forever is the porniest. Especially the Kang chapter, although I appreciate that chapter just for the sheer titanic effort involved in putting all of Kang's appearances in chronological order from his perspective.

Agreed. Busiek loves continuity, and I could tell he had fun writing that chapter to sort it all out. That final battle involving hundreds of Avengers from alternate universes was awesome. It was a fun miniseries all around.

Found and read Bad Island at the library yesterday. Another good read. I liked the characters, and I loved the Prince's backstory and how it ended up meeting with the family's story. And, despite who wrote it, it never got preachy...actually it didn't really have many religious themes at all from what I saw. Great artwork and character design (especially the creatures), too.

Avengers Forever almost broke my 9 year old brain when I first read it. But I pulled through and it gave me a good understanding of Avengers history. It's a shame that it appears to have been ignored, I've seen more recent, often worse explanations for some of the problems it tackles.

I'm not big on superheroes, but I came across Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil, written and illustrated by Jeff Smith (author/illustrator of Bone, and checked it out.

It's pretty good. I reviewed it on the Shazam! page. It manages to avoid the "excessively dark" stereotype of comic books that I really don't like, while at the same time still taking itself seriously, and including some light humor. It's charming and fun.

How is Rasl by Jeff Smith?

My first impressions by its description was a noir mystery with fantastic science and inventions thrown in.

So my sister brought home some old comics, apparently set during a year after "the crisis." And so far, from what we've read, Little Barda and Pec-window-dude / Powerboy joined the Titans, then quit.

And things happen, leading up to Supergirl getting into a relationship with Powerboy. He seems odd. But my sister seems to like him...a lot.

This is all new material to me, as I haven't read many comics before. Why is every ninja and assassin in town after these two kids?

Edit: ...sis is not gonna like the direction they took that guy. I read ahead a little, and...wow was he crazy.

Does anyone hear read Chew? I've just read the first trade, really fun stuff. The book seems to have earned a lot of acclaim when it first came out but hasn't made many waves since. So does anyone know if the book builds off the promise of the early issues or does it just trail off?

Anyone here recognize which characters are which in Femforce's article image? I think it would be helpful to add a caption that identifies them for those not familiar with the series.

I gotta say I'm kinda surprised DC comics character Cheshire was taken off the Complete Monster page for DC/Vertigo characters. Not that I think she was one but she had too many Freudian Excuses.

Just ordered the first volume of Hawkeye by Matt Fraction, as well as The Best of The Spirit. I've heard good thing about both series. Can't wait to read them.

Liked to second that Hawkeye first volume. Glad I read it.

Read House of M for the first time. I wasn't really impressed nor was I disgusted on how things went. I'm also kind of a sucker for stories that have characters experience the happy life they never got.

The Spirit is good. Really good. I had trouble getting into it at first. I thought maybe it's because I'm not used to Golden Age comics. Suddenly, things get hairy. It wasn't that I was in the wrong mindset, so much as Will Eisner not hitting his stride yet. No Seinfeld Is Unfunny here. Eisner was a genius.

So I just picked up the first issue of Pretty Deadly, by Kelly Sue Deconnick and Emma Rios. I've been really, really looking forward to it for a while. I think maybe I've built up the excitement too much in my head, because now I'm really worried about opening it.

But open it I must. I'll be back with my impressions once I've read it.

Edit: Wow. This is just . . . wow. So, so good. Rios' art, obviously, is gorgeous. Just stunning. Really, if you don't like her art, then you're wrong. It is gorgeous. Jordie Bellaire uses colour really well to make it even better. But it's got this ethereal, otherwordly feel that is absolutely captivating.

De Connick's writing is fantastic. There's an extended sequence of a character singing a song. And it's beautiful. I could hear it in my head. It's a beautiful song. So beautiful. So haunting.

Buy Pretty Deadly. You owe it to yourself to read this beautiful comic. And it deserves to be read. De Connick and Rios deserve to be successful.

There's also, at the back of the book, a two-page letter from Kelly Sue. And wow. She goes through some major events in her life, related to her fear of falling. And she writes it in a style that's intimate, and beautiful, and captivating. Reading that letter, I got totally enthralled. This book is soo good, that even the writer's letter at the back is enthralling.

So please. Please. Buy this book. It needs to be bought. If your local shop doesn't have it, ask them to order it. Buy it online. Whatever it takes. But you have to buy it.

So holy crap. I just found out that there's a Kickstarter to reprint Nelvana of the Northern Lights, a Golden Age Canadian superheroine, and one of the first female comic heroes (she even predates Wonder Woman!). That's pretty awesome. I'll be honest, I actually did kinda want to read those stories. The only Golden Age comics I've ever wanted to read. There's two hours left in the campaign. Their goal was $25 000. They're currently at $54 000 - over twice the goal. Which is awesome. So congratulations to them.

She is also the first Canadian superhero. Quite cool.

That is one interesting kickstarter. I wonder if she becomes popular enough to deserve not only a reprint but a revival. Maybe someone is interested in write/publish new stories of her.

There does seem to be some hope that some new Nelvana stories will be authorized. Right now, the rights to the character are held by the Dingle family, until 2025. The people behind the Kickstarter hope the Dingle family will approve new stories being created. It'd be pretty great if they did. I figure a lot of Canadians would be behind that, if only because we all grew up on Nelvana Limited cartoons.

So, yeah. Fingers crossed.

(...)until 2025

Oh, I do so love to spot such blatant fails of copyright laws.

But, anyway, yeah, lets hope this character revives. I mean, I personally didn't knew her until reading your post, but reading the first Canadian superhero was actually a woman is kinda awesome. Make me wish she was more well known.

It's Canadian copyright law. The copyright is held by the family of the creator for 50 years after the creator's death. Dingle died in 1974. So the copyright is held by his family until 2024, becoming public domain in 2025.

I actually kinda think that Marvel should buy the rights, and then introduce her to continuity. They already have Nelvanna as the name of Snowbird's mother, as an obvious reference to Nelvana.

Reading IDW's first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mirage reprint collection. Maybe it's just me, but I get a Web Comic feel from this series. I guess it's just that it's clear that Eastman & Laird weren't planning on making a multimedia franchise that lasts for over 25 years. It's very much a labor of love, very experimental, unhindered by any predecessors or even editors.

The annotations after each issue remind me a lot of The Rant, as well.
