Yeah I guess.

It's not like we're the pinnacle of intelligent discussion anyway, and maybe the lack of anonymity would make people less inclined to be idiots.

Why have a subforum? The wiki now isn't the same as it was when TT was created. We have the Wiki Headlines, the forums, the editing tips and the mandatory registration. We have tools now to tell people not to put personal anecdotes on the main pages.

@AU on last page: This is probably because that's generally normal, while Fetish Fuel contains things like Looney Tunes.

I think the anonymity is part of Fetish Fuel's confession appeal, but that's just me.

Oh great, now I want to defend the namespace. I ought to head out for now before I make stupid unreasonable posts.

Hey, Fetishes has had some pretty weird stuff in it as well. Though more kinky weird than sad weird, I guess.

shimaspawn has pointed out that some troper tales pages might be useful.

Here's my idea:

  1. Move all Troper Tales pages to another site. Same goes for Fetish Fuel pages. Both of those are effectively fansites of TV Tropes anyway; if anything, IJBM is more part of TV Tropes than they are. Moving them to another site will preserve them.
  2. Link to useful Troper Tales pages from this main site. For example, get a consensus that a troper tales page would be useful for a particular tabletop RPG trope, and then we could link to the relevant TT page from the relevant trope page.

So, who's up for registering tropertales dot com or something?

Or we could just axe the Troper Tales that are icky/negative/controversial. Seems like the least amount of work to me (other than just nuking the namespace entirely)

[up] See, this idea I'm fine with. We have the ability to alert mods of the bad ones. We can flag them and move on with our lives.

There's precedent for it too, since we already deleted the TT pages about incest and lolicon.

I thought there were other reasons to hate furries. Y'know, since it's basically bestiality under a different name. Neither here nor there, though.

2. Link to useful Troper Tales pages from this main site. For example, get a consensus that a troper tales page would be useful for a particular tabletop RPG trope, and then we could link to the relevant TT page from the relevant trope page.

I kinda like this, actually. A ranking system where people could vote what they felt great examples would also help, although god knows what that could mean for Fetish Fuel.

@Shima: As am I. Those that feel strongly about those pages can assist in identifying the problem articles, and those articles can be taken care of accordingly.

It's a far less drastic solution than declaring that every one of the (hundreds? thousands?) of troper tale articles are completely irredeemable, and purging them all.

Re what about Fetish Fuel? No, we're only doing it for Troper Tales.

Voting examples up and down for TT pages should be left to whoever runs TT.

FF's capacity as a Confession for people who are seeking validation of their disturbing hang-ups is but one of the reasons for getting rid of it. If people want to have people tell them they're alright for wanting to do things to the corpses of Disney characters or whatever, they have an outlet in Fandom Secrets. No need to drag TV Tropes through the mud.

The same, I feel, applies to TT. Spin it off to another forum, make it a subforum, clamp down on it - these are all solid suggestions (Glenn certainly has a good idea there). But there is a stigma to it, and it does TV Tropes no favours. That it was here first is no reason to defend it, nor is the possibility that some disturbing posters may be turned off from contributing to the main site. Keeping it only leaves open the possibility of missing stuff or having it come back tenfold in other pages. Why not just remove the tumor completely?

I don't get an "ow, my childhood" reaction out of it, but that's just me and it's irrelevant.

As I think about it more, getting rid of TT entirely and moving it to a different website (preferably under a different name) is probably the best solution. If we must, we could probably link back some of the better examples through the Real Life category, but as a whole it's better if TT was gone.

Barely relevant thought: Has the number of new Troper Tales entries gone down since "getting known" became a requirement for editing?

Probably not, since "getting known", all things considered, does provide you with a slight amount of anonymity. Unless you deliberately write your own username into the entry, you'd have to search through the page history to find who wrote what.
