[up]Oh yeah, I could already tell and it's glorious.

Hell, once I finish watching Part 4 and 5, I should watch Part 2 again dubbed. [lol]

I don't like the dub at all. The voices are weird and inferior to the Japanese ones across the board (especially the villains. All of Part 5's minor villains don't stand out nearly as well as the Japanese) and the usage of the shoddy censored names ruin a cool part of Jojo's.

I love the dub. XD

"MY TARGET WASN'T YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT WAS THIS PILLAR."

"I'VE BEEN GIVEN A GOLDEN CHANCE. YOU THINK I'D WASTE IT? While you were bragging about reading my movements, I took the liberty of READING YOURS! DO IT, ZIPPER MAN."

"SUCH TEDIOUS BILGE ALL FOR SOME GIRL (his biological daughter). YOU'LL ROT IN HELL YOU PHILISTINE MOUNDS OF EXCREMENT."

Most of the dub switches aren't even bad. Emperor Crimson sounds better than King Crimson and makes more sense given Diavolo's ideology and inspiration. It's fun to see how they compensate for the legal issues too - Diavolo refers to himself as a "king," Pucci calls his "Maid-en Heaven," Limp Bizkit to Flaccid Pancake, etc. The worst was probably Deadly Queen and that wasn't that big of a deal for me.

And I'll fight anyone on this, Golden Wind and Zipper Man are cooler, more thematic and logical names than Gold Experience and Sticky Fingers.

it’s not like they renamed everything because they thought it was funny, it’s a legal problem that can’t really be helped

How is Zipper Man more thematic, exactly? Sticky Fingers is the Rolling Stones album with a zipper on it. Which gives a neat tie to the Rolling Stones stand that both started and ended Part V.

Because "Sticky Fingers" refers to cleptomania, not zippers? Like, the thematics are genuinely neat, but it is up there in non-intuitive names like Limp Bizkit.

See I didn't even know the album had that feature and while that's a cool detail - if you had a ghost that looked like his would you automatically think "I will name this sticky fingers?" Is that what it does? How does that name represent what it is?

It's pretty easy to see that he is a "zipper man" because his Stand, a helmeted male figure, is covered in them and manipulates them.

He doesn't really do a lot of stealing, so the name never sounded like it had any in-universe meaning either.

Here's what Word of God said about Sticky Fingers and why he named it that:

Araki: The Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers had a zipper on it. So, I thought it would be cool to have a zipper Stand, and made this one.

It's as simple as that.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up] It's Jojo's, "logical" and "thematic" is completely irrelevant most of the time when Araki only picked names because they sounded fun and cool. Zipper Man, Emperor Crimson, Golden Wind, etc. are all boring and uninspired name choices. Doing off the wall music references are hilarious and gave the series a fun identity. Not everything needs to make sense.

[up][up]I mean, sure, Emperor Crimson and Golden Wind are pretty bad, but Zipper Man is at least Spice Girl or Crazy Diamond level.

Like, I'll agree that the name changes tend toward miss rather than hit, but I personally don't feel it harms my enjoyment. That said, I haven't watched the 5 and 6 dubs yet, so maybe they really drop the ball all of a sudden, who can say.

Crazy Diamond and Spice Girl are much more fun than Zipper Man. Zipper Man is extremely generic and worse than Sticky Fingers.

[up][up]I'm aware of why they were censored. I still think they were lame and a detriment to the identity of Jojo's. This is the same series that starts off referencing Speedwagon and Tom petty out of nowhere for no thematic or fitting reason. These references exist because it's cool and I enjoy the raw experience of Jojo's than a watered down version.

[up] Gotta admit, I've no clue what you're talking about. Could be because I'm kinda analysing the names from music-neutral perspective, but the only thing Spice Girl has going for it is being a music reference. Like, I'm kinda changing my mind here, Zipper Man is a better name than Spice Girl because it's kinda out there.

And, like, it's fun! Like, Zipper Man is such a non-serious name, I could easily see it being dead serious. Does that make sense? It's kinda hitting the sweet spot for me. Though, it would probably benefit from being more of a "Stand Name Allusion" than an actual stand name, if that makes sense. Letting it shine without the weight of Sticky Fingers on it's back.

Zipper Man is not out there at all, it's extremely safe in fact since the basis for this name is a man using zippers. That's boring and uninspired. Spice Girl is not nearly as safe since it has nothing to do with Trish's ability and is just a musical reference. The fact that it's referencing Spice Girls is hilarious and what makes the name out there. Her stand cry is literally "Wannabe" lol. That is fun, basing the series off western music is entertaining and part of what makes Jojo's so weird and fun.

Again, this is the same series that based characters off AC/DC and Tom Petty for no reason in Part 1 and 2. Music references is baked into the series' identity. These names fit more than random names you'd see in a superhero comic.

[up] Okay, first, the fact that you're arguing the the man with zipper powers shouldn't be called Zipper Man is to me an argument that calling a man with zipper powers Zipper Man is not a safe option.

Second... Okay, this is hard to define, but Something Person is a... kinda inherently silly thing. Like, we have Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Ultraman... anyone else? Wonder Woman, I guess, but my point is that most of these are, like, older than my folks.

And then there's Zippers! That's just an Inherently Funny Word and the idea of zipper powers is kinda comical, which I suspect is why Araki went with them, to see how far he could go.

Put those two together, and you get Zipper Man, a perfectly out there name that no-one sane would pick, and that's why it's awesome. Spice Girl meanwhile relies heavily on being a musical reference, but I'm not convinced that would fly outside of Jojo.

It probably gets extra points from me because Chainsaw Man exists and just commits to silly names that just kinda work out beautifully in their inherent silliness. The fact that the kind of thing Zipper Man's doing has been done and worked out elevates it, I suppose.

I should probably take some time to say that I think I actually agree with you, it's just that in a vacuum Zipper Man is a beautiful name I've somehow come to adore over these... 63-ish minutes. In context it's worse than Sticky Fingers, but it's not a bad name.

Spice Girl not flying outside of Jojo's is a bit of a moot point since that's the entire point. Araki picks it because he thinks it's cool not because it's narratively rich or makes sense. Musical references are the bread and butter of JJBA that wouldn't work anywhere else. It's a dumb charm to call characters "Vanilla Ice" "J Geil" "Notorious B.I.G." etc. Jojo is built off musical references even when it doesn't logically make sense. It's what makes the series weird and dumb in a good way.

Zipper Man isn't inherently bad but it's bad when applied to an unorthodox series like Jojo's. Especially when it's lazily tacked onto a stand that uses zippers. That's boring and uncreative, the name being silly doesn't really change that it's lazy to have it applied directly to a man using zippers as his power.

Huh. So this is what arguing with me is like.

It's Jojo's, "logical" and "thematic" is completely irrelevant most of the time when Araki only picked names because they sounded fun and cool.

The problem-solving and creative applications of logic and strategy throughout the plot of Jojo is one of the franchise's selling points, and Jojo has numerous themes over the course of each entry - rock music, stones, fate and destiny being a few of them.

The names listed are not boring or uninspired, but that's subjective.

It's irrelevant in terms of choices like these. The musical references aren't normally picked based on deeper meaning. Araki picks off vibes, thus the OG names are more natural since they represent a peak part of Jojo: unusual content for the fun of it. Tom petty and REO Speedwagon had no reason to exist thematically in terms of name/reference choices but it worked.
