Hopefully this doesn't start a flame war, though I doubt it will...
What is the absolute worst anime ever made? Preferably not too long (26 or less episodes is best). I don't mean "I really don't like this anime, but other people do". I want, nay, NEED, the most unambiguously despicable creation in the whole of the medium known as Japanese animation. The only limit is that it can't be hentai, as that's pretty much the same as showing someone a porno when they ask for the worst movie ever.
The anime with the most people who agree that it's the worst will be the one I watch.
I write pretty good fanfiction, sometimes.Asking for the worst anime is a tall order, simply that the quality of art/entertainment will always be partially subjective. As for contenders for the spot, I'd go with MD Geist (particulary the sequel) and Musashi Gundoh for series I haven't seen and Ikki Tousen for series I have.
@Noimporta: Darker Than Black, maybe?
Actually, I guess it has too many episodes if you count the second season.

I guess it is.@Noimporta: FLAG or Kurau Phantom Memory are both worth looking into. -series whoring-
@Five X: Try Psychic Wars or MD Geist.

Pat. St. of Archive Binge
For true "my eyes and brain are imploding" stupidity — Space Thunder Kids. That's a movie,so it may not count.
See here as well.
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.@Noimporta: I recommend Vandread. Season 1, 13 episodes, Season 2, 13 episodes. It does have romance as a subplot, but I personally think it's mainly about the mecha, drama, and comedy.
Gankutsuou has a plot all right. To be expected since it's based on Count Of Monte Cristo.
Also, I haven't actually watched this, but I've had it recommended to me repeatedly, so you might want to check out Simoun.
I've watched both Gankutsuou and Vandread, I'll give FLAG and Darker Than Black a try (I assume the first season should be cohesive and satisfying standalone, if it's good enough I might watch the second one)... and will look into Simoun.
Thanks, everyone.

Yep, Darker Than Black's first season should be standalone enough. I recommend watching the bonus OVA episode at the end, too - very amusing.

What's precedent ever done for us?So, I need to write an uber intelligent Chess Master-type who's going up against a violent gang whom he obviously cannot beat using any type of violence.
As I have no experience writing Chess Master or Xanatos Gambit or Batman Gambit whatsoever, I'd like to watch a few series that feature Chess Masters like the one I'm writing prominently to get the hang of how characters like this think and work.
Suggestions?

Well, Code Geass comes to mind, for it heavily features a character of the 'physically weak Chess Master' type.
If you want a more general idea of Chess Masters, you might try Death Note or (on the manga side of things) Liar Game, both of whose plot basically run on duelling Chess Masters.

I've read/watched all of those series. :D Down to the very last episode/manga chapter.
Wait, that might be not true. -goes to check if a new Liar Game chapter has come out-
By the way, as a tip to those who are reading the Liar Game manga: Listening to the Pirates Of The Caribbean theme song as you read it is a great way to enhance the epicness of the mental battles.

Legend Of The Galactic Heroes features a lot of strategy/politic/tactic battles of wits between the characters. Yang Wen-li, in particular, is a master of making the best out of very unfavourable situations.
Nope. I haven't seen lots of the "classics", like NGE or GITS or stuff like that. But I PLAN TO.
EDIT: Oh okay, sorry about Simoun then. Again, I haven't actually watched it, it's just a lot of people go FUCK THIS ANIME IS AWESOME... and I thought there wasn't romance, just lots and lots of Girl-on-Girl is Hot fanservice?
edited 17th Jul '10 11:05:47 AM by Anarchy
There's quite a bit of romance, as well as some subtext (including incest and lolicon subtext, the former of which quickly becomes text...) on top of the fanservice.
Anyway, GITS: SAC 2nd Gig is worth looking into. There's a definite chessmaster aspect to it.

Awesome, thank you.
I'll definitely check out Legend Of The Galactic Heroes as well.

After plowing through what's available of Blade Of The Immortal, I'm now unfortunately suffering from Awesomeness Withdrawal. Thus, to get out of my rut, I would like to make a request for something with the following elements
- Historical Fantasy — Setting isn't too important, as I've liked both western and eastern ones.
- Some to a lot of action
- Predominantly character driven (or at least has reasonably compelling characters to go with the plot).
Stuff I've already watched/read in this genre include Baccano, Chrono Crusade, Sengoku Basara (rather light on the "historical," I know), Katanagatari, and the aforementioned Blade Of The Immortal. I've tried getting into Samurai Deeper Kyo to no avail (I blame immediately attempting it after reading Blade Of The Immortal. It suffers the problem of starting off too much and not enough like BotI)

O-oh dear. You probably should have read Samurai Deeper Kyo first - it's a great, great series, but it's definitely no Blade Of The Immortal. Again, disregard the anime and read the manga, if you haven't already.
I haven't actually read this, but Vagabond (by the mangaka of Slam Dunk, if you can believe it) seems to fit your criteria. Don't worry, it's NOTHING at all like Slam Dunk.
But YES. I'm happy that you enjoyed Blade Of The Immortal.
It's a series that needs way more love than it gets.

Samurai Champloo isn't much for fantasy, but it does do some surrealism and otherwise fits the bill.
I just read the description of Kyo and think I'll start reading it- what does it mean when it calls the cast a Commedia Del Arte Troupe?
Also, I'd definitely second Champloo. You might check out Gintama. I've never been able to get into it, but it fits the criteria you mentioned.

I've already watched Durarararararara.
