^ Whose excuse was that? It's somewhat understandable, but whoever did that did a great disservice to him/herself...

Let's play a game about Pokémon...(*eyes glaze over at the tl; dr*)
...I guess all I want to say is that, for me, trying to play the original Metroid is like trying to read Chaucer in the original Middle English. Sure, I could put effort in and do it, but! There's a perfectly good translation available, I think I'll poke that instead. I actually haven't read Canterbury Tales in either form, shhh.

@Napalm: I'm not comparing it to conventional JRPG's either - for the writing, I was drawing parralels to Disgaea, which is better written. The gameplay, meanwhile, is standard, or rather was standard. As for JSR, I know it wouldn't, which is why I didn't even count it as a whole game and compared it to elements of the same kind in other games, that being the freeform movement primarily and the correct button presses to do the grafiti secondarily. As such, nearly all modern open world games can be compared. As such, their movement is more precise and covers better ground and the other activities are more interesting.

You are displaying abnormally high compulsions to over-analyze works of fiction and media. Diagnosis: TV Tropes Addiction.I haven't heard it, because I typically don't talk to myself, but I've avoided Mad World because it seems a bit too violent for me. Is that a lame enough excuse?
Helpful Scripts and Stylesheets here.Yeah, kinda. The gore's bad, but not on the level of, say... some DOOM levels or Unreal Tournament. There's one game that was specifically about making the goriest combos ever (not Manhunt).
Here's one from me - Didn't like Killzone 2 because I made the mistake of playing on Hard from the get-go. What followed was the most rage inducing opening levels of my life. FUCK.
Half-Life: Dual Nature, a crossover story of reasonably sized proportions.I'm not against Mad World due to gore content, but its level of violence. It just turns me off. It seems above and beyond most other games I play.
I'm actually quite fine with gore.
Helpful Scripts and Stylesheets here. And that is the lamest excuse I've heard to not like Mario. Also, it kinda completely misses the point.

You mean Mario wasn't supposed to be plot driven?
Good sweet balls, man, here I've been plunking down time in those games expecting them to finally address the riveting plot hooks that tie into the story. Such as the issue of Princess Peach's seeming lack of parents, her not being a Queen, and Bowser's true motivations for hunting her down.
Was really hoping for a resolution with clones, more ancient superweapons than you can shake a stick at, and Bowser trading out his dated look for something with more angel wings and sparkly eyes. Also a Plumberblade would have been accepted.
I think I'm rather turned off now. What have I been doing with my life and who took my pants?

"People are calling me stupid on the internet."I don't even know what this thread is about anymore...
But either way, Excuse Plots are just as common as ever. Look at Team Fortress's plot. Man Hunt or whatever that game was called. Mad World. A lot of fighting games. Hell even Left 4 Dead only have an Excuse Plot at best, even the developers admitted not wanting to explain the zombies or story at all.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Indigo, now you are speaking from ignorance. You really Did Not Do The Research, and just blindly assumed things in gaming aren't done anymore.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. So? What makes multiplayer games so special? Know what else is multiplayer? Diablo2. And that game had a story that...worked. (that game has problems, but story isn't it), Resident Evil 5, Bioshock2, 358/2Days...it's like you're making these exceptions and rules as the thread goes on.
...I woulda thought Diablo2'd be potholed....

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."So the hell what if they were multiplayer? For one thing, you gave no such qualifier before (and didn't at least state you forgot to), so adding one now just looks like backpeddling to avoid admitting your claim was proven wrong.
"an old competitive multiplayer game"
Signed did not mention competitive only.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Because competitive multiplayer by its very nature is randomly shifting as players drop in and out. There can be no progression because there's no end point. Nothing happens and nothing can happen, because the same thing needs to happen again. This is basic logic. The people need to experience the same events again by the very nature of multiplayer, so there cannot be an progression of events.
And Signed, what in the hell are you talking about?

It's almost like arguing to a brick wall...
Since when were you under the impression that I didn't think there were Excuse Plots even in old games. I'm just pointing out the problem with YOUR claim that...
They still exist. Things like storytelling may change overtime, but they don't necessarily improve.
And while it's stupid to argue which games have better plot or not, if you give me something like Arkham Asylum or Uncharted2 or that cowboy GTA game, then I raise you a Terranigma
.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."

I stopped playing Mother 3 at the end of chapter 1 because the game was too sad.
